Will this pass my MOT ?

Post by vim147 » Thu Jul 11, 2019 7:00 pm

Took my 2006 Audi A4 for an MOT today and failed on tail light bulbs.

Seems like I have an aftermarket LED cluster which you can't replace the individual LEDs as they're soldered onto the ribbon.

I can't find a matching used one so the other option is a new pair at £200.

Would you know if I put in a normal bulb cluster tail light on one side that ain't working and it'd pass the MOT or do both side need to be matching ?
Afterwards I can consider my options.

1st pic is LED one, the other is normal bulb cluster. ImageImage

That is a good one.
I was a tester for many years but never came across anything like this but if the light is fully functional i can't see why it would be a fail.
Have all the LED's failed on the old light ?.

From what I can remember there isn't anything about how the light is produced just that it has to be red and same position on the car.
If you have the original lights why not stick them both back on save any bother

Only 3 LEDs work out of 13

Don't have originals. One of the previous owners must have upgraded them.

Much appreciated.
Just need to know if it'd pass if one sides tail light is LED and the other side is of the bulb tail light showing in the pics above.

If your really not sure ring the station that did the mot. Testers do vary opinions so ask the bloke who did the test

I'll be speaking to the mot guy on Monday.

Does anyone know if they do a full inspection mot again if I take it back within 10 days for a retest or will they just check over the things it failed on ?

Many thanks. I went to the breakers yard today and got a whole set of the non LED version and fitted those. Although I've left the LED version that's on the boot lid mounted on the car.

The back light of the bulb version looks so faint compared to LEDs that they hardly look switched on.

The faulty led light could well be an easy fix.
I did the high level brake light on my x5 only part of it worked.(50%)
I found a how to on the net showing where to solder a bridge wire on and job done all led's working again.
