Why didn't my alarm go off?

Post by scott_higgy » Sat Oct 06, 2018 5:20 am

So last week my B5.5 was broken into and my Pioneer head unit stolen X( X( X( X( X(

They forced the drivers side lock, however my alarm never went off. This was overnight on my drive.

Is there a reason why my alarm never went off? i know it works because i've set it off by accident a few times.

Cheers pal. I was fuming at the time, spending time and money to make the passat look good and have a few nice touches and for some little willy to spoil it all.

Now I'm unsure on what to do!!! replace the head unit or just leave it!!!

I have no idea, Passats are famous for water ingress to the comfort control unit, hopefully it's not that though.
Might be an idea to check the writing to the drivers door as that is how the alarm would be set when you lock it.
Does it show the drivers door open on the instrument cluster?

Yeah all doors light up on the cluster when open.

I was told when i bought the car off the lad that all the drain holes had been blocked to prevent water ingress!!

I do recall having a bit of water on my floor mat on the drivers side, it was on top of the rubber mat so couldn't have come from below it, i just thought as it was a wet day it was off my shoes, but was there before i got in the car and a bit too much to be run off from the shoes!

Passenger side footwell below the carpet. Check for bad splices, bad earth's. Pollen filter is usually the culprit for letting water in.

carpets or mats on the passenger side have never been wet.... strange.

I'm away working so will look when i get home in a few weeks.

So to resolve my car not having a working alarm i would need to replace the unit????

It depends on what's wrong it may be as simple as a broken wire.
If you could scan for fault codes that would help point you in the right direction.

You could use a Bluetooth adapter, less than £5 and an app such as Torque Pro again just a few quid, there's a free Torque Lite app that will read fault codes for free.

From experience if one of the door modules is iffy, this can cause the lack of beep when you lock the car. SO your alarm doesnt set.

With a selected door open, lock the car, then close the door. If the beep sounds, you know that module is ok. Move onto the next door.

Just to note, they may seem dry ontop, but once you lift them they could be lots of water underneath. Best pull them back and have a look. If theyre as wet as one of the passats i have, i had to literally cut out the whole passenger side to dry it out - no way was it goign to dry out on its own especially in winter. Had an inch of water under it.

I changed my front passengers side wing recently and loosened the front bumper, i wonder if thats had any effect?

Pull the plug off the one by the bonnet catch and put a paper clip or a bit of wire across to short it out would be my first check.
You should get a bleep when you lock/unlock.
With a fault on a door module you will need to scan with software or scanner opening and closing doors won't help as the only time you will ever get a bleep is when you have no faults.
