The muppets at VW didn't stipulate a gearbox oil change for our manuals instead they called it a "life fluid" .
As the oil aged over the miles and years it thickens up causing poor shifts especially from cold , this is often mistaken for worn synchromesh.
A fresh change and especially going to a lower viscosity helps , another benefit of going lower weight is less drag so this frees up a bit of power/ torque and mpg.
