OBD Port Accessibility

Hi all,
Anyone have trouble plugging in an OBD reader? I have a wireless adapter and also a full VCDS adapter, problem is the plastic surrounding the port is too tight against the socket so it won't physically fit without removing the OBD port which of course is a pain in the butt. I have considered trimming away the plastic around the port, at least it won't be seen. Maybe there's a slim adapter that can 'extend' the port away from the plastic?
Anyone got around this problem?
