Stop Start control logic.

Post by BruceABZ » Tue Jan 30, 2018 3:07 pm

Hello, When should the Stop/Start first kick in? I was always under the impression that it would be once the Engine was at normal running temperature.
The car is cutting out when it has only just drive 50 yards, on Icy cold mornings. Is this normal?

Thanks for the reply, but the owners manual states a precondition for the stop start is a minimum engine temperature, but doesn't state what that minimum is. i can't understand why it would activate at freezing.

You can always see stop start status in your radio screen/car info/press stop/start. Worry if stop start kicks in late.
Just had my battery replaced and stop start kicks in after few yards from cold start.

I've noticed mine normally cuts in when the engine is just below the normal 90 temp however if u have things like heated mirrors/windows etc running it normally takes longer to come on.

its norma,l but many variable dictate when it happens, frosty morning with light or without light will change things, hrw, heated seats, etc and importantly the charge state of the battery. lots of short journeys will probably mean the battery isn't fully charges so less likely for the auto stop to kick in.... What the exact criteria is heaven only knows!

Just turn it off. It's a feature because the emissions test includes a portion of a couple of minutes idling (simulating traffic lights). Stop/start means the car makes no emissions for those minutes, skewing the test.

In the real world most of the time you'll stop, wait a few seconds, move a bit, stop, and repeat meaning you use more fuel/make more emissions with the engine stop-starting. It's a nice idea, but geared towards gaming the tests, not making real-world driving any better.

Plus turning start/stop off will add few years to your starter motor's life. Probably turning off will triple it at least.
