CRLB engine camshaft sensor fault - implausable signal?

Post by rh1464 »

Evening all.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with this fault and the way it seems to be presenting itself?

last couple of weeks, occasionally when trying to start, usually first thing in the morning (but that could just be a coincidence) the engine turns over for an extended period before firing - in the order of 5 seconds i think. It then comes up with the stop/start fault warning, although i think that is just a result of it sensing an issue on starting?!

On reading the faults on the engine with VCDS this is what seems to be coming up? Any ideas.

I have used some contact cleaner to clean the connection (and it looked fairly clean anyway) but that hasn't helped.
I've looked at the wiring harness which is a straight run from the connection to the ECU and there is maybe the tiniest bit of.. well i wouldn't say burning, but a light shining of the wrapping where it has been near/against the HP fuel line, which is obviously hot. however it doesn't look serious enough to have damaged the inner cabling and i would have expected a more consistent and frequent fault if that was the case.
The other option that i have read about elsewhere is that the timing could be a bit out? Is that likely, and again, i would have expected more frequent and consistent struggle when starting. However, is there an easy way using VCDS measuring blocks to identify a timing issue? From the blocks that are to do with the camshaft, the measured and required values match. With the engine off these seem to be showing as 10 degress?
My next step i think will be to replace the camshaft sensor and see if that helps.

Has anyone got any advice or ideas on possible causes or solutions.

Many thanks,

Rob
