Wheel Downsizing? 18in to 16in?

I'm thinking of downsizing the wheels on my Passat B8 from the fitted 18" Oxford wheels to a set of 16" alloys. While I love the look of the 18", I feel the ride is a little harsher than I'd like, especially compared to our Jag XF which is sitting on 17".

I don't expect to get Jag levels of comfort out of a VW, but does anyone have any experience here of driving a Passat B8 on 16" or 17" alloys compared to 18"? Will it make a significant difference? I'd like a little softer and quieter ride, and not too bothered about performance.

Also, is anyone interested in buying a set of 18" wheels with some Michelin Primacy 4 tyres (4 - 5 mm tread all round)?
