Remap my Passat B8

Post by smilie121 » Sun Jan 06, 2019 9:34 pm

So I am still thinking on a remap and decided to revisit it

I want the EGR mapped out as well as the DPF. Blanking the EGR off my 2005 B5.5 Passat saw a noticeable difference in power but better, an extra 6 to 8mpg when driven respectively. The B6 was almost as good an improvement as well (lights were on).

I have been contacting several companies about remaps. Most say they can gain me 30bhp and can throw in a EGR and DPF mapped out. 2 or 3 said they could get an 40BHP and a bit more again if I wanted EGR and DPF done. But they also wanted more money as they wanted to gut the DPF and blank or put a pipe into the EGR.

So besides that I am getting conflicting advise on whether or not I need the EGR blanked off. Some say although its mapped out its still a bit open hence a blanking plate will yield best results. Another said its always closed unless it cant because of clogging and therefore no blanking plate required.

A customer of mine who is a MOT tester said he is supposed to look for interference with the DPF and EGR as well as the exhaust system. The criteria says it has to be original and not modified from intended sound levels and emissions and even leaks. Whilst he is a nice guy he is thorough and feel he would sooner fail a car than let it slip a little. A jobsworth as they say up here. Also he said he is to fail any car with a engine management light or if it sounds louder than what he expects of that vehicle and therefore deterred me from any exhaust mods.

Avon Tuning in Bristol gave lots of advise and eventually got me to get in touch with a guy in Edinburgh that does mobile tuning across the central belt of Scotland. He was knowledgeable and spent some time advising me whether I use him or not. Quoted £275 for 2hours to remap and map out EGR, DPF and said I didn't need a blanking plate.

Prices quoted are £250 to £350 for the typical 30BHP increase and they will remove DPF and EGR monitoring. All said the increase in horse power is based on the map and couldn't say if EGR disable would improve performance - different to my experience on 2 previous Passats - B5.5 and B6.

Lastly as I have a DSG, i see that can be altered for better performance. But the Edinburgh guy advised a ODBeleven Pro would allow me to get all i want out of the DSG and throttle timing. It has other benefits too.

So ...... any input?

I've always remapped my cars apart from this one as ive got it on finance, I use a place quite local to me which has always done a good job, with the dsg I looked into this with my previous passat, I found unless you were going for extreme power then it wasn't worth mapping as it can handle the extra 30+bhp with no issues

There is a bit of throttle lag with the DSG

Check the ODBeleven thread in the B8 section and there are comments on it. I would like to invest in a OBDeleven

However looking at other hardware on ebay, there is a octane tuning device on ebay for £300 - not only can it map the vehicle but it can do lots of other things like the ODBeleven. If so I think it would be an investment worth while.

About egr, I would like to think that it's normally closed and not passing anything through unless it's damaged. Otherwise it would be like driving around with blown up intercooler- turbo is making boost, but part of it gets lost through hole in system. In this case egr would be leak point in intake system.

You definitely want egr out this adds about a oner normally , con really as it's only software , there are some that don't add .

Egr remains closed if in good working order .

I am pretty set on getting it done. EGR is a must of course and if it gains more HP over the acclaimed 30bhp then great. 190 to 220 ... maybe more? I will have to default to eco mode for the wife.

One guy I spoke to said there is a 240Bhp passat on the continent and said its the top map (the one i would get) plus EGR value reduction (but not off). So he claims. But realistically, for any claims to be verified I would need a Dyno for verification and don't think I will fork out for figures on a bit of paper.

There was/is a 240 Passat in the UK. Biturbo though

An extra turbo and extra 50horses over my stock

Yet a remap is supposed to get 220 ish and more MPG with just the one turbo on my car

Why o why are car manufacturer's not doing something about this. They are all competing to sell cars and whilst more BHP and faster might not be their target, higher MPG figures would help. Makes you think they are all in a secret meeting agreeing how to screw us everyway they can. But lets not get into conspiracies.

Back on topic, theres lots of folk offering for you to send your ECU to them and return via secure means. As justified he would only sit the car and work on it computer wise. Has anyone done this? I would be paranoid about refitting to find my car has become a 15k brick sitting outside my house

To be honest I'd be going on recommendations. I've heard great things about West Yorkshire running near Leeds. If I ever get a remap that's where I'll be going.
