Clutch failure

Post by Gruss » Thu Feb 08, 2018 9:11 am

Hi everyone I'm new to the forum and would really appreciate some advice/info. I own a 2ltr blue motion on a 16 plate with 16000 miles (10000 when bought 6 months ago) . A couple of days ago as I tried to change gear the clutch pedal stayed on floor . I coasted to a halt and then loads of dark grey smoke came out of engine bay. Bonnet up the smoke continued for about 5 mins. Car recovered to dealer . Gearbox out and they say that clutch flywheel and slave need replaced as they melted due to excessive heat - and it's my fault!? I have been driving for 30 years and never replaced a clutch . Are they correct , how can this happen ? They are talking over £1100 to fix ! Please help!

That's pretty bad service for a dealer, as above push them as they probably try their luck with alot of people hoping they will just pay.

I have just found out that the car had software recall carried out in June 2017 and the mileage recorded as 10127. I bought the car in august 2017 with 10111 miles ( showing on car and every document from dealer ) ?????

was the 10111 mileage when the dealer acquired the car and after the recall and test drives, moving from compound etc the mileage was then 10127 or higher when you got it?

after all the issues I would still make a noise at the dealer and let all the customers hear that you have had a clutch failure on 16k, this may make them think??

had a similar problem with warranty issues with a Renault years ago, hence why I am now a VW user.

I don't believe that it is possible to kill healthy clutch in 6000 miles, so either something has done wrong from previous owner or part is faulty and must be replaced under warranty. It won't be easy to get it done on their cost. Hope things will sort in best way for you.

I've continued to pursue dealer and VW UK. Unfortunately VW UK default to stance of technician at dealer. Tech stated it's the worst he has ever seen in 26 years !!! Excess heat has destroyed clutch , flywheel and has melted the slave . NOBODY can offer an explanation as to why I've never replaced a clutch before but suffer such a sudden failure without warning . The term used is "driver influenced " wear and tear !!!

And did they explained why mileage has gone back when looking at service record. I believe it's maybe just a mistake, but anyway it just proofs how carefully they are doing their job.
