CLAY BARS?

Hi guys I'm new to car detailing what are clay bars all about and is it worth the graft
I've recently bought a machine polisher and pads and some G3 compound to give my 2002 wagon a refresh and intend to keep on top of the paint in the future.
But there seems to be millions of products and steps in the cleaning/detailing process now so I'm a bit confused on where to start.
So anyone fancy doing a how to on cleaning detailing I'm sure there's loads of people like me..
