Decided to tackle my headlights today as they were looking a bit yellow.
On closer inspection, I noticed how badly scratched they were!
So I chose my weapons:
3M Masking Tape
Soapy Water (Fairy Liquid) in a spray bottle
Wet & Dry Paper (grades 1000 / 1500 / 2000 / 2500)
T-Cut
Meguiars PlastX (plastic polish/cleaner)
Autoglym Super Resin Polish
General Cloth (for applying)
Microfibre Cloth (for buffing)
Soaked the Wet & Dry Paper in soapy water for 15 mins.
Masked off the surrounding paintwork (to stop it getting scratched)
Applied T-Cut to the headlight lens (to make sure it was nice and clean)
Started rubbing the lens vigorously with the 1000 grade paper (side to side motion only) whilst keeping the lens permanently wet with the spray bottle. This creates a cloudy appearance because the lens is now scratched (no nice way to put it, lol).
As the liquid runs off the headlight, it should look milky... this is the grime etc that you're trying to get rid of (see it running down the bumper in the pic).
I then repeated the rubbing process, working my way through the different grades of paper.
Dried off the lenses.
Applied PLENTY of PlastX plastic cleaner to seal the small scratches that are left over.
Harsh buffing (my arm nearly fell off) - repeated this a few times.
Finally, I polished the lenses (to protect them) with the Autoglym and buffed them to a shine.
Now they look like new again! Well pleased!
