advice on polishing aluminium please

i have a few bits on my cars including engines that i would like to polish up, i have seen people taking heads and similar from a rough cast state to a chrome like finish. i have tried various things but either they do more harm than good or they do not much at all, also i find it hard to get right in to some corners.

what tools, products and techniques are best for getting that OOOOOOOH finish?
