Polo CGPB 1.2 12V not starting, cam sensor fault, popped pipe

Post by jimbof »

Brother-in-laws 1.2 12V CGPB Polo died in traffic - a few attempts to start / jump start by him and my brother, in the end they pushed it to a car park.

I got over yesterday to have a look - several fault codes, cleared them, attempted to start (turns but doesn't start), only code remaining is cam sensor implausible.

Against my better judgement (egged on by my little bro) bought a sensor today.  Fitted, turned over a couple of times, loud bang and small amount of smoke under the bonnet.  At first I thought electrical, but car still scans fine.  Not dared turn it over again.

Look around the engine and find that a pipe around the back of the engine has come loose, but worse than that, it has snapped a middle section off (I guess due to pressure) - so it can no longer reach where it attached?  Could this be uncombusted fuel vapour from previous starts having blown something out?  Or likely a more sinister cause?  I assume this was the bang, with the smoke coming out of the broken pipe.

Any ideas on anything I can to to investigate further?  Petrols are all "foreign" to me... :(
