On saturday I replaced the power steering belt on my brothers 8v gti after the belt snapped and he just gave me a call to say that the belt has snapped again.
The steering pump pulley didn't seem particularly free so I was wondering are you meant to be able to turn this by hand when the pump is off? I tried and the thing was absolutely solid but unsure whether they're meant to be that stiff or not.
It seems to be this that's causing the belts to fail as there's a strange squeaking sound when the engine is running (although the power steering works) and before it snapped it started smoking and all the teeth look chewed up (from what he tells me, I've not seen the belt or the failure of it).
Any ideas guys?
