K series rover engines

I was helping my brother rebuild his metro gti lump after he blew the head gasket ( surprise surprise) amd i have to say the engione design is very poor and a lot of cost cutting seems to have gone in to it. The headbolts were a foot long and hold in the crank bearings aswell and everything is just so hard to work on and in strange places. The bore liners were huge so I think that they bore all the blocks the same and use the liners to alter displacement. Now I've only seen ford and vauxhall engine insides but they seemed a lot better though out and better engineered.
