Front subframe bolts how many?
I'm going to be changing my steering rack soon. I'm just unsure how many stretch bolts are required on renewal plus does anyone know the torque settings and turns required? Am I right in saying its 4 stretch bolts for the main subframe and 2 off for each of the rear arm bushes? Plus another 2 for th...

Brands for front control arms
Hi Looking to get new control arms complete with ball joints and the lower arm bushes as a complete set. Whats a good brand to go for. I've looked at the febi at 90quid per side but wondering if anyone has used other brands to good effect. Ideally I'd like the above, so the front lower arm is comple...

Re: Water in the driver's footwell
I'm pretty sure I cut the end off one of my drains to make it wider and stop bits getting stuck in it. I had the same problem. Removed the wipers and scuttle panel and clean it all out.

Re: Front end knock
I had a hunch it could be brake related, after many a head scratch! I'd cooked my front passenger disc a few months ago, seized caliper. The disc was quite warped so today I fitted new discs and pads. It appears that the warped disc was pushing the pads off, probably leaving a small gap allowing the...

Re: Front end knock
Thanks for the info. How does a garage diagnose a knocking rack on a ramp when the fault is internal? Curious how they replicate the issue if I have a little fault finding mission myself.....

Re: Front end knock
Could be my rack then. No I've not got any knocks when stationary and turning the wheel. Is there any way to diagnose if it is the rack....

Re: Front end knock
I've read about the steering rack issue. Steering feels fine, normal, no knocks thru the steering at all.

Front end knock
My b6 has developed a front end knock on the passenger side. I've had all drop links replaced, its still there. Its a bit of a strange one, going over speed bumps doesn't cause any noise. Any gradual lumps in the road and its fine. The main issue is when the front hits a very rough section of road, ...

Re: Car got towed to the garage, any ideas!?
Got it to my usual vag specialist. Timing was all OK, pins went straight in. He cleaned the anti shudder valve, checked it was working OK. Also found a fault, the fuel pressure regulator was shot, short to ground. A new one has been fitted and its all good. Not sure what the first garage was going o...

Re: Car got towed to the garage, any ideas!?
Well all I know is that its running but after speaking to the garage I get the impression they're too busy to properly investigate the cause. Can an egr or anti shudder valve thats in the wrong position for starting the car make it sound different. They said it sounds fine when its running now but l...

Re: oh no,cam belt?
I'm sure I had them faults when my timing was out. I got an indy to adjust using the torsion values on vcds. Might be called something else now. I believe there's some adjustment in the cams to hit the sweet spot. Also, maf sensor, is it plugged in? I had the same fault after doing some work and for...

Re: Car got towed to the garage, any ideas!?
Yeah I hear its ok. I believe that one tooth shouldn't be an issue from what I've read.
The service chap who doesn't know much about mechanics claims that the starter motor is also drawing too much current from what he was told.

Car got towed to the garage, any ideas!?
This morning I did about 2 miles of driving after a cold start. It felt a little hesitant on full throttle but I've had this before when cold. Anyway, got to a red traffic light, turned to green, few revs on, it spluttered and died and refuses to start. It cranks OK, but the RAC bloke said it sounds...

Re: Rear end knocking
Thanks, was it the top mount or the shock itself? Can you recommend a good brand thats a standard spec? I usually stick to sachs for springs.

Re: Rear end knocking
That is best practice but not entirely necessary and not the issue I'm having. You'd expect a knock on the opposite side, the one with the older spring as this should be slacker if the old spring had compressed but the ride height both sides is perfect. I see your point but new to old springs, we wo...

Re: Rear end knocking
Thanks. I did have a new spring on that side 18 months ago, hoping its not that! I'll get it on the ramp for a look although I suspect it would be better on an mot ramp so all the bushes etc are under load but illsee if I can see anything obvious!

Rear end knocking
Hi My b6 has started knocking on the rear passenger side. Its an odd one and speed bumps and slow gradual bumps in the road don't create the sound. I'd say when the wheel is on a rough surface creating high frequency it does it. I do know I need a new shock on that side as its leaking but can't imag...

Wish I had gone there myself now, but refuse to find out the price difference!
Thought about going aftermarket but not sure on quality and with this job being a bitch, I hope it shall see the car out!

Re: p246e exhaust gas temperature sensor 4 bank 1
I did the job if anyone comes across the same problem! It's the sensor after the dpf and before the flexi on the downpipe. I didn't even bother trying to access it from the top so did it on the drive. Easiest way is to spray some penetrating fluid on it, leave it to sit for a while and then cut the ...

I've got the caliper off, took the fluid reservoir cap off, tried to slowly push the piston back with a rewind tool and it's seized!
