Re: Exhaust manifold gasket, replace or not?

It's a separate unit on mine, got a refurbished one which was delivered in a small-ish square box. Bolts onto the exhaust manifold flange with 3 bolts / nuts I believe. The exhaust manifold itself could therefore be the original and has never been off. Put it this way an exhaust leak can infiltrate...

Re: Suspension advice

Not forgetting that there are around 18 different front coil spring versions alone for the 3C2 (B6 as it is commonly known) so decoding the dots requires the full VW "key" (list). What model is yours J1MMCD? I find my stock Sports Sachs springs and shock absorbers plenty adequate for my pu...

Re: front lower arm ball joint removal

It's OK, I have seen a video on Utube. The size of the single nut is 18mm which I didn't have but I have ordered one today.. Let's hope it comes off easily, the one on Utube did! :- I find they come out easier if you use a spreader socket in the pinch joint. Insert it in the joint and a 90 degree t...

Am I right in saying if you continue to drive the car with the engine light on it won't do a regen and could lead to a blockage? Sent from my SM-G998B using Tapatalk Yes depending on whether the fault triggering the engine light is related to emissions control. There are a few yellow warning lights...

Afternoon everyone. I’m 100 miles from home and just had a warning light come on. Glow Plug light flashing and message saying to go to the garage. Car went into limp mode… pulled over turned engine off and back on, glow plug light not flashing but car still in limp mode and exclamation mark still o...

Re: Changing rear pads VCDS question

@J1MMCD I'm technically Scottish as I was registered in Edinburgh. Spent a lot of summers in East Lothian and the Orkneys, where my father was born. I think our extended family is spread across Scotland as I have relatives in the East, West and North of Scotland as well as in the Orkneys.

Re: Changing rear pads VCDS question

Another wee difference between the cast iron and aluminum caliper types are the piston sizes. One has 41mm wide pistons and the other 38mm ones. Won't be an issue if you are reusing the old caliper after a clean up / refurb. The plastic thing (not sure what to call it) should lift out of the master ...

Re: Changing rear pads VCDS question

Bit of a drama so far from reading your posts. Just a few things to note: There are 2 types of calipers one aluminium (later models) and one cast iron (mainly earlier models from 2005 to 2007/8). There are 2 types of spindle used in the motor / caliper units, one a 6 point Torx and the other a 12 po...

Re: Rear Caliper carrier cleaning

I use a brass wire bottle type brush attachment on a drill (it's part of my Nielsen glow plug hole cleaning kit) but otherwise any cleaning utensil that are not too abrasive and which fit in the hole would be fine. It's usually just dirt, old grease or rust that's in there. Not had a Passat brake ca...

Re: Changing rear pads VCDS question

Then back out the pistons using VCDS / other brake service setting software. On later models the dash will ping and the P parking brake fault warning light will illuminate to signal a service ready state (certainly after 2008 models I believe but not for earlier 2006, 2007 or 2008 if I recall). Thi...

Re: Changing rear pads VCDS question

Connect a battery charger first, and switch it on. Low battery voltage when doing EPB brake maintenance can lead to brake module damage on earlier models. Then back out the pistons using VCDS / other brake service setting software. On later models the dash will ping and the P parking brake fault war...

Re: Imminent Lift Pump Failure?

I have the 12v DC pump motor itself to re-install in an old lift pump housing unit which has not broken upon removal. The Magnetti Morelli (MAM00013) barrel pump was only £24 and I'm just waiting for my new heat gun for softening the shrink tubing so I can replace it. I will then have a spare!

Re: Imminent Lift Pump Failure?

You might have sorted this already, but in case you haven't yet...safety first disconnect the negative lead of the battery. As you said, a good clean first, have a shallow plastic bowl ready, along with some absorbant cloths, preferably not paper towels as you don't want anything going into the tank...

You can get 1 to 2 and 2 to 2 Fakra adaptors online via that auction site where you CAN buy a yacht now, or that "Amazing" billionaire's mail order company  . Cost between £6 to £20. There are also ISO to Fakra adapters too if you have the traditional old skool aerial connector. Or l...

Re: Errors and then won't start!

Sounds like either a bad ground, your alternator has failed and drained the battery or you have a wiring short somewhere that caused the dash to go off.

There have been posts in some VW forums covering random complete dashboard shut off incidences.

Re: Passat B6 2.0 TDI Re-installing twin balancer gear driven oil pump

Hi, my first post so please don't shout at me if I've put this in the wrong section. I had oil pump failure about a month ago and finally got around to taking the sump off yesterday and having a look. The 77mm hex shaft has rounded off so I have ordered a new one. I was a bit silly as I removed the...

Usually Bank 1 Sensor 4 which is the post DPF sensor I believe. Can cause a blocked DPF which may not clear without a forced regeneration. Reading of module level live data is not always possible with certain diag tools when using them for VAG cars. Autel, Snap On, VCDS, Carly, and many other VAG co...

Just me then I guess!!! FFS Not an easy one to diagnose especially without any codes. This is where competent mechanics use live data to check values during a cold start to see if anything looks out of spec. There is a way that VCDS / VagCom can log live data I believe which may help someone pinpoi...

I have just bought a 2007 PD Estate with basic cloth seats. I already have a dead 2008 common rail Passat estate with leather heated seats but a wrecked engine. The plan is to break the 2008 car and to move the leather seats across to the 2007 car. I know that the seats will physically fit, but wha...

Re: Fuel flap problems

First thing to check is the fuses, then if not a fuse, the wiring loom exiting the door into the front chassis as often constant opening and closing of the doors can cause wire breaks. The rubber gaitor can be pulled back to inspect the individual wires. Was a bigger issue in Mk V Golfs as the earli...

Re: Just one fault and cant get rid of or find

There is no radio anymore (even though you have a different head unit, what the Can Bus sees is not a new radio). This is what I would try but keeping a note of all current codes if amending them. Do this at your own risk. Go into the Can Bus module and remove the radio from the Installation List, t...

Re: Ground clearance

Mostly the sump, fuel cooler if exposed and the fuel tank although the sump should have scrape protection via an under tray if still fitted. The sump is aluminium however and can shatter if hit hard enough. On a 4mo you'll also have the exhaust to contend with which will also be a low point but fort...

Re: Coolant leak sense cambelt and water changed.

Just also bear in mind that the car is over 10 years old and often parts fail or weaknesses may be exposed one after the other in related groups. This is all seems to be coolant circuit related and often replacing one part transfers stress to other old parts, which may fail as a result of them now b...

Post MOT woes

After a successful MOT in mid March, blowing only 0.38 smoke and having just a few minor advisories I have a small knock which I believe to be a conrod / bearings possibly aggravated due to a failing DMF that I had planned to do in the next few weeks along with high mileage. I have not driven the ca...

Re: Issues

Other things to check / replace: EGR cooler, these can corrode internally producing much smoke but you would experience a slight coolant loss. Valve stem seals, do not last the life of the car and would be a major cause of blue smoke. I replaced mine at 140k and they were solid and no longer rubbery...
