Anyone on here know for deffinate the state of play with the variable limit speed cameras such as the ones on the M25 and M42? Ive not been had, no problems there just whenever the variable speed limit is enforced there seems to be people hoon through the cameras without triggering them, I'm aware n...

Re: Any reason bonnet being open has drained my battery?
Thanks steviemac, the panel arrived today (20 quid from ebay maplin) and got it suckered onto one of the rear quarters and utilised one of the lightersockets back there which seem to be on a pernament live, handy. To add on from earlier, been sat since monday and battery is still good so who knows w...

Re: Any reason bonnet being open has drained my battery?
You sure the electrickery didn't escape while the bonnet was open ??? Thats what I was trying to figure out. Granted the battery is probobly not in great health especially now, cars locked now and Im away for a couple of days, Ill see whats what when Im back, got a solar panel en route so hopefully...

Re: Any reason bonnet being open has drained my battery?
If you park it outside Chris, some of the classic car brigade use a small solar panel on the parcel shelf to trickle the battery. Can get various sizes/prices etc - may be worth a thought? Brilliant idea, should of done that ages ago, just on the bay now. Im going santa pod for big bang this weeken...

Re: Any reason bonnet being open has drained my battery?
Thanks for the input. Its a 1.8t with a 59Ah battery, does do shortish runs and not too frequently, so I would imagine the battery most likely doesnt get to full capacity. It was put on a slowish charge which took the best part of a whole day, it has the inspection caps but havent had a peep yet, we...

Any reason bonnet being open has drained my battery?
As per title really, spent all saturday afternoon and evening carrying out various tasks on the passat only to find while packing away my battery was dead. It had charge when I started, has been sat for only a week and the interior lights all worked and were bright when I popped the bonnet and I tur...

Re: can I turbo my n/a 1.8 20v?
Unfortunately that is a transverse engine, the passat is longitude but I like your thinking B-) If you really want to keep the car, youll be best to aquire a 1.8t and transplant all the good stuff into your car. Theres a fair bit of hardware to swap, itll be apparent if you compare your engine bay t...

Re: Straight through exhaust
Also the MOT means nothing to the coppers, the law is a different thing. That maybe but surely an MOT states the car is fit for purpose (at least on the day of the MOT, as anythibg could happen to that car after it leaves the station), the police surely must operate within the criteria of an MOT? I...

Re: Straight through exhaust
Interesting, but how many cars get past an mot with some form of exhaust alteration? Not sure if the police are even aware of this, or if they do there are so many out there it would consume their time, so they just go after more worthwhile game. Although if one does get pulled they will rause an is...

Re: Straight through exhaust
I asked my MOTer about this and he said he looked into this a while ago and according to him and his sources levelers and washers apply to cars that had hids fitted from factory, if its a retrofit then its exept. Not saying thats accurate but thats what I was told when I took my car for MOT, I actua...

Re: Straight through exhaust
Excuse my lack of knowledge but what was the issue with hid ballasts? I thought providing the hid was in the appropriate lense its OK, wasnt aware of an issue having the essensial ballasts. I got pulled years ago and they gave me grief about having a big bore, saying it allows more gas to escape and...

Re: Vac lines and other emissions control 1.8T
Sounds as though you may have an issue with the vacuum booster, I lost some breaking power when I first had my passat. Upon checking the pipework around the inlet manifold the booster fell apart and was full of oily residue, I had planned on simplifying my engine bay anyway. With the manifold direct...

Re: 1.8 Turbo B5....0-60 in 13.2!
Without vcds or/and a boost gauge you will be stabbing in the dark, coukd be a number of things, n75, split pipe work, leaking intercooler, as mentioned stuck or broken wastegate flap, diverter valve... If you get chance it would be worth fishing the diverter valve out and see if the diaphram holds ...

Re: 1.8 Turbo B5....0-60 in 13.2!
Incorrect it's on the turbo side NOT the post cat side 10 minutes and the sensors off The older 1.8t engines only have one lambda sensor on the exit side of the cat, its a fair point but you would need to unbolt the cat from the turbo to try and have a look at the inside of the cat. yeah you...

Re: 1.8 Turbo B5....0-60 in 13.2!
I am pretty effective at breaking things too :D There are various small pipes under the bonnet of the 1.8t. The vacuum hoses are about a cm thick and have a fabric outer layer, these are prone for dry rot, the rubber breaks down and they become brittle and crumbly, easy enough to replace although re...

Re: just lowered.. few questions
Can you roughly tell where the groaning is coming from, rack itself or from under the arches? Maybe lift the bonnet with a buddy sat in the car turning the wheel or does it only happen when the cars in motion? Originally I lowered mine so the spreader plates at the rear end of the subframe almost sa...

Re: 1.8 Turbo B5....0-60 in 13.2!
Google puts the 1.8t 0-60 in around 9.2 secs, some sources put it at closer to 8s, with a top speed of 129mph. Most garages have some kind of diagnostic device that but often something generic, as mentioned previously for the price of a cheap ebay lead and vcds lite its a no brainer. For me its prov...

Re: My turn to post my cooling problems
Mine read differently between the two pairs also. Out of interest roughly how warm do you think the cts would have been? I measured mine at around 10 degrees, I read 4 and 2kohm ish iirc. Looking through the measuring blocks in vcds the temperature readings in instruments and engine seem to be accur...

Re: vds pro anyone?
Brilliant thanks Karl!!
You did guess correctly I am mainly after the window mod but vdspro does has other uses.
The motor diag route is not an option for me as I have a b5 which doesnt have the supported ccm.
Best get the PC fired up and see how I get on.
Thanks again

Re: My turn to post my cooling problems
My appologies I didnt really give much detail earlier, I had a few minutes to spend before setting off before work and quickly responded via my phone. Cars been sat since the weekend so it was certainly as cold as it was outside. It was about 8 degC this morning, and in vcds the coolant temperature ...

Re: My turn to post my cooling problems
Right just measured the cts and the iat they are at 2k and 4k respectively. I am convinced my climatronic doesnt read below 30. Just plugged in vcds and the knock code is back so thats another thing to sort and there was a code relating to the cts. Cleared the codes and they stayed gone after cyclin...

Re: My turn to post my cooling problems
Nice bit of info thanks! But it seems my troubles may not be over. Looking at the notes the car might not be using the cts for the start temperature if I have a fault code for it, which would indicate an issue with the air inlet sensor which Im sure I have another from a manifold, Ill have to check ...
