Re: Running on veg oil
Long term, svo does also cause ring gumming, also on start up small amount of fuel, ie: veg oil drops into your engine and it dont mix well with engine oil and causes sludge etc, so with the extra oil/ filter changes its not worth it, unless you fit a twin tank system with pre-heater/ heat exchange...

Re: Running on veg oil
I've been running my 1Z engined 96 Passat TDi on roughly 80-90% brand new clean veggie oil from Costco at £0:90/litre compared to around £1:35-1:40/litre for diesel. So that's a conservative 45p/litre cheaper than diesel which means I save over £30 every fill up. To me that is well worth it. Fuel...

Re: b4 1.9tdi real world mpg
As stated above: Brim it then drive it for a few hundred miles. When there's about 1/4 tank left brim it again noting how many litres it takes. If you want it in English multiply the litres by 0.22 to get the gallons. Assuming you did 600 miles and the gallons used was 12 (54.5 litres) then your mpg...

Re: Installing starter button?
My B4 TDi came with a starter button already fitted. Turn the key to get the ignition circuit on then push the button and way she goes. Not sure how it was wired as I haven't needed to touch it. It has been fitted to the right side of the steering column shroud/cowl.

Door handles look great! I wouldn't drop it any more at all. I agree the rims don't look right but I think it's the colour, maybe have them powder-coated silver or just stripped and polished/diamond cut?

Agree, don't say mint if it's not (no used car can be mint anyway). Still sounds like you got a good deal though.

V5 should state engine number which, in the case of the 1Z engine, starts "1Z........"

PCD should be 4 x 100mm so have a look on eBay. Not sure about off-sets though.

Have you tried GSF, Eurocarparts etc? They tend to carry parts for older models even if the Main Dealers don't.

Re: Veggie oil in my B4 1z ?????
My B4 TDi (1Z) is currently running on around 80% new veggie oil (92p/litre from Costco) and fuel economy has never dipped below 52mpg averaging 55mpg. Each 20l 'bottle' I buy saves me about £10 at the pumps so about £30 per fill-up.
Just pour it into the tank, no need to pre-mix it.

Cheers guys. Both Euro and GSF can't supply at the moment unless a special order is placed. I'll look into Stevens.

B4 Rear Caliper Carrier
Does anyone know where I can get a ROS caliper carrier from for my B4 '96 Passat TDi estate? Looking on eBay they seem to be available for older and newer Passats but not mine!
Also, are these shared with any other models, Golf Mk3 for instance?

Re: 96 passa
Assuming yours is the 1Z engine you can also save some dosh by running it on a mix of Veggie oil and diesel. My 96 TDi estate is still averaging 50+mpg on a roughly 75/25 oil/diesel mix. I buy my oil new but at 91p/litre it's about 50p/litre cheaper than pump diesel.

So you are complaining that a job you would only normally do every 10 years or so takes 2 hours rather than one hour and then comparing it to a car that has no rear seat belts and all the ugly greasy bits showing. Really? The seat belt reel wasn't the problem, it was all the trim that needs to come...

If I want to change the rear shocks on my Hillman Imp there's two bolts at the top and one at the bottom - just the same as my B4 estate. Except, before I can do the top two on the Passat I have to dismantle the load cover/rails and all the interior trim in the boot plus half that around the back se...
