8x18 et48 with 225/40 tyres is tight with no spacer, depending on tyre manufacturer (as stated above they are not all exactly 225mm wide) can be the difference of rubbing the arms or having just a few mm clearance. Imo a gearbox oil change is always a good place to start with gearbox problems, they call them fill for life but there is no way any oil will be as good after 200k miles and 15 years as it was new.
