You can activate the light, as the OP said, but unless you have the seat sensors, it just pings, then goes out.

IIRC there are pressure pads in the seats and sensors in the belt clips.

I was going to type what Matt has already said.

Keep going until you can afford something better. There's no point (unless the car you have is spotless etc) in turning your car into something that is already on the market.
