Re: Rear bearing fused/rusted !

They could be triple square or could be hex, Just clean up and scrape away the rust as best you can.

There is obviously a hole in the hub where you can get the socket on to them (rotate in turn for each bolt).

Re: B5 Plenum drainage problem now auto gearbox failed

Could be something silly like an interlock switch or the wiring to and from it and the ECU.

The brake light switches are renowned to fail on non autos. They have two outputs, one for the brake lights, the other to the ECU....

Could be that simple (hopefully).

A MAPP gas blowtorch, very useful and also a great toy at summer BBQs melting glass bottles and blasting through beers can as if they are not there. Top top though, diconnect the torch head from the cylinder. I lost the gas in a nearly new cylinder from what must have been a very slow leak, it was s...

Re: Thermostat sticking?

As it is an AFN TDI (best TDI VW ever made in my opinion) they are so thermally efficient that at idle or slow in town journeys they will never get to temperature. You need to drive it for at least 30 minutes working the engine to get it up to temp. Also with being a AFN, they have three glow plugs ...

Re: B5 Plenum drainage problem now auto gearbox failed

That is good news, glad you have found the problem. I hope the new ECU sorts it. Before it arrives it might be worth doing some research online to find out if the new ECU needs to be "coded" to the car. Chances are it will be plug and play but there is a slight chance it won't. If it does ...

Re: The dredded door lock

I've done this a times few now and once they are dead I've found the easiest and quickest way is to get a hammer and chisel to it. Be careful not to mark the outer doorskin with a mis-placed blow but smash the lock actuator until its guts fall out, then the door will open. Obviously make sure you ha...

Re: B5 Plenum drainage problem now auto gearbox failed

Find another garage! An auto box filter and fluid change is not that difficult but to get the level absolutely correct diagnostics are required to measure the oil temperature as far as I recall. Have a look at these videos, it might be worth buying a pump and do it yourself... https://www.youtube.co...

Re: All Weather Tyres, which are best?

The answer is proper winter tyres and a set of snow chains. Depending on where you are going, there are certain mountain passes that you will not be allowed on without winter tyres and snow chains. They make you stop and chain-up. I would very carefully research where you are going and establish wha...

The cooling system is bled as follows; 1, Remove the plenum cover, back of engine bay between the bulkhead and wipers, you will see the flow and return hoses to the heater matrix. 2, Undo the three screws that hold the coolant tank down. 3, Back off the left hand (or marked with white paint) coolant...

Can't beat a 7" AV . Upgrade speakers and add a reversing camera ? It can take a camera which is an optional extra at about £65. But with my car being the highline it has factory fitted parking sensors which are very good so no real rush or need. As for having a screen, not that bothered but i...
