I think a lot of this is chasing rainbows, much focus on one specific issue, when going back and reading post 1 suggests there are a number of issues of concern regarding the general condition of the engine, poor condition, quite serious ones that would suggest a serious inspection at the least.

When you say they are voltage sensitive what do you mean? They're easily overloaded? How could I damage one accidentally? If you cant find anything obvious top end or timing belt, then it needs a thorough check over from timing to fuel system to whatever, and i mean by a good mechanic who knows the engines, and if thats still unclear it probably needs a full engine out stripdown.

Why disable it if its working?? Fix the error. You should know what the error code and cause is if you have vag com, fix the error.

AFS is an excellent feature, and given its integrated to the car and its canbus system, and the headlights, im not sure you even can, or should disable it.
