Okey, sorta update..... I'm going to partly break this B3, all interior & mechanical parts are going to be available but no body parts will go (as I might need parts or manage to build another franken-passat if I can find the bits B-) I'll be starting a thread in the sales sections and on the fb...

I forgot to mention that I haven't checked whether the holes match up with a head gasket yet, but I will have a look today. Also worth checking that the gasket is the right way round aswell ;) Sometimes can assemble the gasket upside down and can have water in cylinder X( Think of an 1800 cvh engin...

On the plus side, my 'spare-parts' 1991 1.6td B3 wagon is dry inside

Okey, somewhat late progress report.... I've removed most of interior, carpets / sound deadening in front floors & halfway up bulkhead... After a few days rain (great Welsh weather) I looked to find the passenger front footwell had 3" deep paddling pool and an inch deep in drivers front :-o...

All mk3 golf engines are shared with B4's (& mostly in B3's I think :-? ) Or is it all B4 engines are shared with mk3's :- There are subtle differences (mk3 golf 1.9td had cable clutch & B4 1.9td had hydraulic clutch etc. ) Same with engine looms, mk3's are combined with lighting loom wherea...

I'd suggest a better gag for the 'client' in the boot

On the pas side of the engine you have a lot of gubbins, on a hot day the viscos fan can be heard & maybe this is the noise? (Like jet engine??)

Think the 'Choke' actually advances the pump timing slightly so I'd suggest either checking the cambelt / timing or replacing the cambelt & setting pump & cam exactly to the crank
Cambelt is quick to change & cheap

B4 will be the large spline type as fitted to mk2&3 golf etc.

If it won't turn over then it's either the startermotor that's.... 1. Doomed & needs removal/repair or replacement. 2. Missing it's trigger from the ignition switch, on the starter motor there should be a small ish (Iirc red / white :-? ) wire plugged into the solenoid. Check this is 1, connecte...

Is it a tdi or td? If tdi you don't need to wait for glow plugs :wink: Does the engine turn over with the ignition switch / key? If not then it's possible the ignition switch has failed (this is a common '80's & '90's vag problem :roll: ) Also, when changing the battery you might have disturbed ...

Got a ml3tdi loom in my B3, look for a B4tdi pedalbox as the mk3 one won't go anywhere near the B3 bulkhead

What sort of insurance cover was taken out? Guess it's normal road cover not agreed value ?

I've a B3 that has a 'book' value that is not worth writing so I've got agreed value cover but hope that I never test the insurers
