Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Had MOT the other day so went over the car and realised I have been driving around with no brake lights. No one mentioned it so assumed it only recently happened. So night before I took the old bulbs out and I only bought the wrong bulbs. Never done that before in 12 years so must be getting old or ...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Sounds right, just very difficult to locate the issue.

As it not really affecting driving I’m going to just keep an eye on it

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

I can confirm the alternator bearing is working as it should but the sound came back with a vengeance. I did notice it wasn’t happening all the time on full lock just most of the time. I think I’m going to have to wait until the actual part breaks down or worse still take it to a garage. Lol Cv join...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Sound has not come back at the moment. However everything I have read leads to alternator pulley. I’m taking the belt off today and see if it’s free one way and locked the other. I think that’s right but see how it goes. Pulled out the Haynes manual after about 2 years. Sent from my iPhone using Tap...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

It stops only when I turn the fan off. air con, eco, auto all make it go crazy. If the fan speed is 0 then the noise stops completely. Regardless of which setting. I put a long breaker bar on the alternator, steering pump and ac unit with my ear to the other end to see if I could locate the sound fr...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Not sure but the sound goes when I turn the climate control off. Looking under the bonnet it seems like it’s the alternator. It’s making some strange noises. Only on full lock either side. Going to take the belts off one by one now and see if anything changes. Car still works as it should though. Bi...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Another suggestion might be alternator as it doesn’t happen whilst stationery only while moving and turning the steering wheel

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Would anyone have any ideas to a high pitched chirping sound coming whilst turning left or right from the front of the car. It’s only evident in car parks or tighter spaces but it sounds as if it’s getting worse. I was thinking power steering, cv joints, bearings or brakes? Read something about trac...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Have been contemplating on which oil to use next as I have done 120k miles now. Decided on sticking with the carlube c3 5w 30 that’s 507.0. Cheap at 25 pounds but Carlube now recommend 5w 30 R tec 20 which appears to be very similar to the one I’m using just with the 507.0 stamp and a bit more expen...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Put some roof racks on my car over the weekend. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210406/902b5ca176e363e46278e2d34c3362c8.jpg Was not too sure when ordering if they were worth the price but on fitting they appear solid, made from aluminium I think. I have noticed a big increase in wind noise at spe...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

First time today the car was blowing warm air as soon as I started it. It’s never done that before. Outside was 11 degrees. The climatronic was set to 21 degrees but it felt like the car was already warm. The car was reading cold though like the first start of the day. Ended up turning it down to co...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

I suppose it’s easier to pick up the right one from the shelf when it’s marked up right. There’s been plenty of times the recommended oil hasn’t met PD requirements on the online tools. It’s a bit misleading sometimes but I will stick to the 507 seems to be fine atm. Thanks for the info. Sent from m...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Interesting, thanks for the info.

What I don’t get is why Carlube make so many 5w30 oils. They seem to be marketed at the different car brands, maybe different additives. Suppose it makes it easier to buy.

Wish they went back to the 5l containers though.

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Found this Gaz. Similar to the Castrol 507.0?? Can’t remember but the viscosity looks the same across all temps?

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Just read through a couple of old posts of mine and the pela was 17 years old in 2018 so it’s had some use. It’s been patched up a bit with ptfe tape, and could do with a wash. The front end has metal coiled inside instead of just plastic. Does the job but takes ages. Must have pumped it 100 times t...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

The other down side to the Carlube, they used to be 5l and it was ideal since a tiny amount was needed for topping up. I used all the 4l and it’s still about 200ml short of full. The price is a bit cheaper but I will probably by another 4l so I can top up and then use it for the next service. My car...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Just had enough time to change the oil. Took longer than I thought, the extraction pump is about 17 years old now, kept losing pressure. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210220/ee2d06aaa3d21d3874dbc74ae2ad488f.jpg The Carlube 5w30 seems equivalent to the Castrol, only difference it not being long ...

Thanks Gaz, Was meaning to get the oil changed today but ended up having a clear out of the garage. Will make time tomorrow hopefully. Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

That’s interesting, upon further investigation carlube have a few 507.0 spec oils. Not sure what the difference is beside the price. This is the one bought: https://groceries.asda.com/product/car-maintenance/carlube-5-w-30-fully-synthetic-vw-4-l/1000187171260 I assume it’s not long life then. It doe...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Planning to do the oil today this afternoon. Not doing the pollen filter or the air filter because they still look brand new. Need to change the brake fluid and bleed the brakes as it’s been 2 years since last time. Probably do that when the weather improves. Check the brake at the same time. Car st...

Re: Clutch n Flywheel

Mine has a vibration on idle but only when it’s properly warmed up. I changed one of the mounts at the front when I did the timing belt, changed from a foam type to a rubber type. From what I remember the rubber was a lot stronger but since then I have noticed a little more vibration. I remember che...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!

Wish I had this charger earlier. It’s nice to be able to see how much the battery is holding. Might be nice to get the torque pro app out again and see what the battery is doing more regularly. Haven’t used it for years. Last time I logged some 0 to 60 times just for jokes. Thanks for your help guys...
