Cruise needs to be activated in the ECU via diagnostic software, like VCDS.

There are many on here who could do this for you, search for vcds / vagcom

Re: Cleaning up, who would have known?

Top tip; Mix 50:50 white spirit and fairy liquid, whisk it up and magically you will have made swarfega. Smells like it, looks like it and is the said same stuff ! What I've found lately though are that those poncy hand soaps (pump despenser type) are also really good for hand cleaning and obviously...

Re: AC help

Also check the resistor pack which is at the front underneath of the passenger side chassis leg (engine bay).

I had to replace one of these when my fan didn't work.

However a dud fan won't stop the A/C working on a B5.5.

Re: A/C troubleshooter.

Nothing, not until you take it for a re-gas / check on the gas that may or my not be in the system. Once that is done and if it still doesn't work then it could be many things, such as, A hole in the condensor rad A dead compressor A dead pressure switch ...and so on. Top tip; take it to a proper ai...

Re: measure twice, cut once

I fitted a pair of drop / 'c' anti roll bars links to my car once the wrong side of the lower arm.

We musn't forget that the B5 design is from the early 90's (Audi), same floorpan and mechanics then VW used it to launch the Passat in 96. The oldest B5 Passat is now 22 years old The newest B5.5 Passat is now 13 years old. You see very few Jap cars of comparible ages on the road because they either...

Re: AC help

Personally, I'd take a punt on a second hand unit and while the system is 'open' change the receiver / dryer and maybe the condensor rad (which is likely to be holed and why things don't work. To fit / assemble; 'O' rings from VW, about £2.50 each but varies. For each item there is obviously a flow ...

Re: Grinding noise from front driver side?

Any one of the above but I've never had any issues with J&R stuff and if it is the bearing, one of those £50 extractor / installer sets along with a pair of 2ft breaker bars works wonders replacing it. No need to remove the hub carrier off the car. But I'd go with bending the disc shield out a bit, ...

Cracking job! I've done similar but with the panels off the car. On my first MK4 Golf (owned 2004-2007) I had a spare front end I sprayed and swapped round, must have done it three times in all. I also gave the Passat back bumper a quick 'blowover' last week. Very naughty I know but I'm using 2k ant...

Re: Windscreen misting up when fan on

A weekend of fiddly work will see a new matrix fitted. I say a weekend as that is how long I took to do but there again I took the whole heater box apart and cleaned it internally which isn't strictly neccessary but on an old car (2004, your is older!) I thought it best. Doing a matrix swap without ...

Re: Windscreen misting up when fan on

I had this and didn't put anything into the cooling system. Instead I spent a painful weekend taking the whole dash and heater box out to change the matrix. That also of courrse included the A/C de-gassed and then re-gassed. It is not a difficult job, but very fiddly and obviously time consuming. I ...

In my first 02 reg B5.5 which I had when they were still quite new way back in the 00's LOL I did about 30k a year for a couple of y...

Biggest cost effective difference in brakes is going larger diameter , simple leverage physics .

Then pads .
And also making sure the fluid is new(ish) and fresh.
