Re: Carry on or scrap?

If you are a moderately good DIY'er the springs and dampers are do-able. The rears are a doddle, the fronts a little more tricky. The timing belt can be a bit more involved and can lead to additional unplanned work a new coolant radiator and an aux belt tensioner etc but it still DIY-able if you do ...

Re: B5.5 ... my one

A minor update on the Passat. I bled the brakes with the help of my eldest Son, only fair I helped him do his a while back and have just returned from a test drive. More than happy with the results. As this was a full system bleed with half of it being completely empty, I let the rears drip out when...

I'm all out ideas and think you have just had some bad luck. I've done four bearings with the same kit without issue. That is four extractions and four installations.

Re: Correct grease for wheel bearings and fitting....

I've got phohotoes back. This if from when I did the Mrs MK4 Golf a few years back, note the chamfer on one end. The chamfered end goes in first and butts up against the stop. It might be different on the Passat though. (just like there being no circlip) https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/colin...

Re: B5.5 ... my one

A lazy day. I've got both sides plumbed in now. A proper piglet of a job too. Much swearing was done trying to line up and 'start' the existing brake union threads into the new hoses but got there in the end. Hope they don't leak! https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/colin__/Passat%20Highline/Bra...

Fitting up the Passat rear brakes. New calipers, discs and pads. Re: B5.5 ... my one

And now for a tale of shedding in a tale of shedding, a bit like Itchy and Scratchy is to the Simpsons. The shed before the current Golf the Mrs drives was a MK1 Ford Focus. The Focus was a fantastic car but one day I thought I'd have a look at the undercrackers.... This is a comparison between betw...

The rust, not as bad as I thought yesterday having cleaned it and prepped it. Nothing structural and surface rust only, which is nice. https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/colin__/Passat%20Highline/Brakes%20Jul%2019/20190706_155312_zpsxm4dugso.jpg POR 15 slapped on and drying. Re: B5.5 ... my one

And there is the problem owning an old car that you care about a bit too much. That quick rust job is turning into a bigger one. I've just spent the best part of an hour and a half digging out a block of seam sealer which must have been 40x60x60mm to establish the extent of the rust. Whilst doing so...

Re: B5.5 ... my one

Good new. The passenger side brake union also undid without issue so there is no need to make any new brake pipes. I'd rather have an unused roll of cupro pipe than the hassle of running new pipes, especially the drivers side one which runs above a heatshield. Popped into my local VW dealer earlier ...

Re: B5.5 ... my one

VW/VAG love to use these calipers and theyre always trouble in the end. Think my loss of hanrake and poor rear braking on the T5 will turn out to be a similar cause. Are they the same / similar then on the van? The issue with that caliper was that is was binding on. You could smell it and the wheel...

It has been a long time. And now I've got the ability to post pictures again, it'd be silly not to. A few of the car in general first, it is still clean and still good. Re: ABS warning light

They don't want the job. It could be something as simple as the brake light switch or a wheel speed sensor. Both are easily DIY fixed once identified and the only way to do that is to get it read for fault codes, which you can also do DIY for a marginal investment (less than it would cost to have a ...

Re: Which is the correct grease for wheel bearings?

Take careful note of which way round the old bearing is when taking the old one out. D'OH! OK... All refitted now and I'm £30 lighter and a whole lot wiser. I'm still looking forward to the passenger side, especially now I know what the job entails etc, and what errors to not make haha Thanks for a...

You might be able to pull that in with the driveshaft / CV joint if it pokes through enough.

I've just been searching for some info and it appears from what I gather that the B5 B5.5 doesn't have one :-?

What does the other side / wheel look like (if you have it stripped down)?
