Manual.
Have seen loads advertised with "not able to select gear" issues. Assuming its not the selector on the outside of the box, I cant imagine that there are a lot of parts inside to break.

What breaks in the gearboxes?
Have looked at loads of Passats for sale now and quite a few seem to be listed with faulty gearboxes. I was just wondering what it is exactly that seems to keep breaking in them all? Can it be a DIY repair?

Am I right in thinking that the B5 and B5.5 models all cam with the 01 type of gearboxes and the three letters in the code refer to the different gear ratios?

Re: Will a VR6 engine bolt up to a B5.5 gearbox?
Im also wondering this, I love the noise the 12v vr6 makes and with turbocharging the potential is endless. I love the updated interior and ride quality of the passat over a golf or corrado so i was wondering the same question. Question is would you need to mount it longitudually like the current 1...

Is anybody able to tell the extent to which the cv joints allow the driveshaft to extend?
I am fitting some to a custom project and need to know how long it is at its shortest and longest. Should be using some from a 95-98 model?
Any help appreciated.

Re: Newish 95 Passat and two minor faults.
Todays update for project white trash - Problem one - Heater blower resistor. Having removed the part from the top of the blower, and looked at the numerous threads that recommend changing the thermal fuse, I headed to Maplins. I bought 2x thermal fuses (180 degrees c) and the soldered a new one on ...

Newish 95 Passat and two minor faults.
Sadly, some local scumbags decided to firebomb my lovely 2001 130bhp tdi, so I have had to buy a '95 Passat estate as a temporary workhorse/sacrificial car. The car is a 2.0 petrol, 1995, estate in white. First fault - Heater blower only works on number 4 setting (non aircon). I have removed the res...

Oil in my breather/air filter box.
I removed my air filter box this week to check some wiring and was a little alarmed to see oil in the bottom of the large pipe that connects to the turbo. I'm guessing that this isnt surposed to be there. The car is a B5.5 130 PD and is still pulling very strong but is using a little bit of oil over...

RATTLING fron driver seat on B5.5
For the past few months there has been an annoying rattling sound coming from my rear passenger door, that sounded like something loose inside the door or a wire rattling aginst the glass. Have stripped the door twice and found nothing. I have now realised that the soundis actually coming form the p...

So have we reached a conclusion yet guys for the B5.5?
Are the heated rear mirrors activated by the heated rear window switch, or are they permanently on when the switch is in the centre position?

Anybody fitted new monte carlo alloys?
Was eying up a mk6 Passat today and decided that the wheels would look good on a b5.5.
They were Monte Carlos in 17inch.
Anybody fitted any and got pics?
Also, apart from VW themselves, where could I get a decent set from?

Re: Heated mirrors not working.
Mine doesnt rotate all the way round at all. Only has three positions.
It woul dmake sense to me that the mirrors would only work when the hetaed rear screen button is pressed. I'm sure that show it was on my old golf V5.
Will have a play tomorrow when I can be arsed.

Re: Heated mirrors not working.
Yeah, I didnt realise that til about a month after I got the car.
Always left it in the centre to avoid accidentally moving the mirrors. Did a scan with my mates diagnostic thing and it didnt show the heated mirrors as being at fault. Nor the rear interior lights that have never worked.

Heated mirrors not working.
How can I check if the fault lies in the mirror element or elsewhere. Because thay have never worked since owning the car, I had assumed that the fault was in the elements themselves and that somebody had left them switched on and burnt them out. The local dealer has told me that they are on a timer...

B5 or B5.5 gearbox - ECU controlled?
Personally I cant see how but are the gearboxes in these controlled by an ECU? I asked him what engines would bolt up to the gearbox as I was just thinking of usi...
