Re: B3 nostalgia post..

I think they must do! Can't have been dipped in the factory so the inside condensates and they rust out. Either that or they're just badly designed. Thanks very much for the above, I'm aware of those two, the one in Cornwall would be snapped up if it was a diesel. Too many projects in the garage for...

Re: B3 nostalgia post..

Yes it was a fantastic car, very clean and original, interior was mint, no rust on the body due to the previous owners waxoyl obsession. The reason for breaking I was told was the front subframe collapsed due to rust. Why that would be reason to break such a good car, I've no idea! I'm keeping my ey...

B3 nostalgia post..

Hi guys, some of you may remember me, I owned this B3 wagon http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/panelbeaterpeter/DSCF2003.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/panelbeaterpeter/passat1-1.jpg I STUPIDLY swapped it for a scirocco, which was very nice but eventually went. I have since owned lat...

I don't think it's coolant, I think it's electrical.

Re: My heater is on FIRE

No problem, I'm hoping I don't have to remove the dash to fix it.. don't fancy messing with airbags etc, I'd rather leave it as is. Not figured mine out yet, might end up paying vw an hours labour to diagnose it.

No, they said there wasn't a way of printing out the legend, just quote the illustration number and the number of the part you need.

Re: My heater is on FIRE

Ok here are the diagrams. Mine is the type of heater in the first one. I reckon the problem is due to 24, 4 or 13. 24 is the heater resistor, 4 is the fan motor obvioiusly, and 13 is?? Still no further with this, does anyone have, or know where I could get a split diagram of a b5 heater system?

Re: My heater is on FIRE

Well it's not curry or coolant, definitely something burning. Will investigate further this week if I have time.

Re: B3 Passat rear disc brake conversion, inc' wheel bearing

Slightly late with my reply here, I sold the Passat in times of financial crisis and have only just rejoined the forum due to B5 ownership. It never occured to me to try retro fitting the old back plates, I find they create as many issues as they prevent. I never had issues with dirt and stones gett...

Re: My heater is on FIRE

Nope it definitely smells smoky and strong, nearest thing I can compare it to would be burning plastic or exhaust fumes. Why would it smell of curry? :???: Checked after an hrs drive and it smells the same whether the engine is running or not. Going back to the resistor, just checking I was looking ...

Re: My heater is on FIRE

Both good points, I did try it without the engine running and couldn't smell it, but that was when I had tried WITH the engine running, and couldn't smell it either, so will try that again later. The flexi seemed to be sealed, I know it moves and so the paste will eventually crack, but the leak was ...

Re: My heater is on FIRE

I removed, checked, and sniffed the resistor.. it's fine. Sorted the exhaust leak, there was a smell for about a minute at first but now it's gone. Fingers crossed that was the problem.

Re: My heater is on FIRE

Cheers, it's a non turbo so I think the leaky flexi is the prime suspect.. Got the car in the air and I can see it is leaking. Will temporarily fix it with bodge paste now and see if the smell goes away.

Re: My heater is on FIRE

On reading through the docs that came with the car, there is an advisory at the last MOT from April, saying there is a minor leak of exhaust gases at the front flexi joint. Could this be related? I suppose the smell could be exhaust fumes, it is that acrid kind of smell. Also, the re circulation ven...

My heater is on FIRE

Hi all, not been on here for a while, had a B3, but now have bought a B5 saloon. It's pretty good, apart from there is a very bad strong smell coming from the heater when you put it on hot. It smells a bit like burning plastic, and really gets stuck in the back of your throat, so I obviously don't u...

B3 Passat rear disc brake conversion, inc' wheel bearing

All parts needed to convert from rear drums to discs. I used all B3 Passat specific parts apart from the hubs and callipers which were B4 items, but I believe they are the same as B3. 2 brake callipers 2 hubs 2 brake discs, pads and bearing kits 2 handbrake cables, disc brake specific 2 flexi hoses...

Re: Hottuning coil overs - fitting and review.

Little update 5 months on, still working great, I did have issues with the front shocks being quite noisy when I turned the wheel, I just took them all apart, smothered them in grease and put them back, been spot on since.

Re: Rear bearing torque? Help..

Thanks, that makes sense. I Did tighten them as tight as possible then slacken off to the point I thought was right, I obviously didn't loosen it enough. I had a beetle too, thank god VW discovered water cooling..
