Re: b6 Passat front washwipe not working

I had a problem with my bonnet catch mechanism not shutting the other day and had to remove and clean it to get it working correctly, the bonnet switch is on there, could it be a problem with that switch? there is no dash light saying that the bonnet is open though? Bonnet catch switch is a well kn...

Shop around for prices. My mate got his compressor done by a local VW indie for £300, plus a belt. But commiserations anyway. VW have had decades to get this problem sorted.

Re: Passat 1.9 TDI B6 DPF

It doesn't have one. My 57 plate B6, 1.9 TDI, was an old-fashioned turbo diesel that didn't go in for all that emissions malarkey. I think you can tell the old models from the engine covers. The pre-DPF ones had the four light grey pipes going straight down (https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/282894224193?chn...

Can't think of anything else it might be. An inspection on the ramps ought to confirm it pretty quickly. Shouldn't break the bank.

Re: Change gear problem...

Sounds like the gear linkage might need adjusting. You've got two cables, one for up/down and the other for left/right, and you can easily access the upper adjuster set if you remove the gaiter around the gearstick. (The lower set isn't hard either, but it requires a bit more spannering, and you'll ...

What he said. And is the coolant expansion reservoir behaving itself? Not filling up with exhaust fumes? :0 (Been there, but not with a VW.)

That rings a bell from the days when I had my B6. It was something really, really obscure, such as the bonnet catch switch! Maybe try searching the B6 forum?

Re: Handbrake problem, again.

I don't know why your breakdown people didn't just remove the motor and get you mobile again? When my offside PB seized, the AA were out in 30 minutes, and they had the wheel off and the motor out in ten minutes. So I was clear to drive home, and my local indy fixed it the next morning. Of course, t...

Never had a problem with Autoglass chip repairs, personally. Would I trust a 'free' fix outside Tescos? I dunno, will they still be there next week when you've got a problem? :???: There are two main things that can go wrong with a chip repair. One is that they don't clean out the jagged edges of th...

Re: MOT Rear tyres?

Four wheel Hunter alignment will fix that (assuming that it isn't just something in the linkages that's got worn.) The wagons especially are prone to this problem. Eighty quid at my local tyre indy (ouch!), but oh, it was so worth it. The whole car drove with a much better sense of purpose after it ...

Re: Car not locking with key?

Sounds like your key fob has lost its sync with the car. We had similar with the wife's Mk6 Golf last year - obviously that was a bladed ignition key rather than the B6 brick, but the symptoms were the same - the key's transponder worked the ignition but it wouldn't do the door locks even though the...

Re: Trim going dull

Can't answer that in detail, since I don't have my Passat any more, but this stuff (http://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/wheel-tyre-cleaning/carplan-black-trim-wax-375ml) has always done the job for me. Very dense, and it doesn't come off on your clothes. Really smartens up a car at selling...

Re: Watchdog advising not to have the emmissions fix done

LOL, the EGR issue is being denied? When the wife's 1.6 Golf threw an EGR earlier this year, it took my indy three weeks to even get hold of the part, because the VW dealerships are snapping up as many as they can get, because the emissions fix kills them - often within hours. The nationwide p...

Re: Snapped cambelt advise

Sounds broadly comparable to my experience when my diesel Focus (of blessed memory) snapped a belt at 30 mph. I was able to get the car up the kerb before it ran out of momentum, and I just had a couple of bent valve stems and a head inspection/shave at the local motor factor. A couple of dents in t...

Yes, get a new insurer. Your existing one will just take the pee unless you change at every year end, and a new one will give you a better quote as a newcomer because that's what they always do. :ymhug: Meerkat always does it for me. I expect they're all the same, though. Don't necessarily take the ...

Too true... It may not be related.. Independent scan it is then.... But if egr related then... Massive coincidence that it's happened shortly after the emissions fix... Don't get me started on that topic. The wife's 1.6 Golf (also an EA189) stopped the other day with a dead EGR, and the indie garag...

Lidl's blue washer fluid. Made for the German market, where it can easily go to minus 25. (I had minus 20 for two straight weeks when I lived in Berlin.) Brill stuff, they claim it goes down to minus 60 - I wouldn't want to try and prove that! But and it never caused a problem with those finicky con...

Wot, no answers yet? If this had been a petrol engine I'd have automatically assumed worn piston rings on number 3. I've never had this problem with a diesel, but I suppose it's got to be in the running this time as well? A compression test ought to show up a leaky set of rings. Are you getting any ...

Too late to be wise now, but it looks like you've had blocked drainage holes at the bottom of your door. Either that or a bad repair in the past. And you'll need to know how far the corrosion has spread beyond what you can see from the outside. Worth fixing, but commiserations. :(

Re: Sloppy gear stick, struggling to get gears

There are two places where gear linkages can go astray - at the top (under the gearstick) or lower down where the selector rods meet the side of the gearbox. My 57 reg B6 (five speed box) intermittently wouldn't engage anything higher than second gear, especially when the engine was hot. Which made ...

I could do with a decent diagram of the front wheel arch/wing area to see where the possible avenues for ingress are, but can't find one anywhere!
