Learned to drive on my Dads Mk1 Golf 1.3 LS (1981 model)
Just Got rid of my 1998 Passat B5 - . - loved it and very sad to see it go , but I needed a bigger tow car. So I have now left the VW fold, and have a Land Rover Disco 2 in the drive instead.

Re: Help Front Lights
Replacement switch arrived in the post today fits and works , but I am seriously thinking of getting rid of the old girl within the next 12-18 months, too many things are now starting to shake, rattle and roll.

Re: Help Front Lights
I know the old girl is getting on, but l suddenly thought did l wire something up incorrectly? Breakers yards seem to be dying out, my nearest one is useless, he only has 6 cars and theyre made up of Jags and vauxhalls, and my next nearest one is an hour round trip. Seems like they are all gong into...

Re: Help Front Lights
About 3 weeks ago l installed a towbar and wiring, which was wired up to rear lights, as per instructions supplied. Would this in anyway affect the main light switch? As I said earlier the light switch has been discontinued, but managed to find one on ebay, for less than a tenner.

Help Front Lights
Here is the problem, last night both front lights worked fine. Tonight both front headlights, mainbeam and dipped beam stopped working, main beam will only work if l pull the stalk in as for flashing, other wise dead. The only lights that work are the 2 little side lights. I have checked fuses and t...

Towbars
Hi all, a few questions regarding towbars, I have a B5 saloon, so will a B5.5 towbar fit? Are there differences between saloon and estate towbars? Can I fit it myself? Are the electrics easy to do? Do I need to upgrade the rear suspension, I need to tow a boat weighing about 800kg including trailer....

Re: Squeaky suspension
Finally got around to having a proper look, with the wheel off, ended up changing the lower front control arm, and the anti roll bar link, only changed the anti roll bar link, because I had to cut it off with an angle grinder, the bolts were so rusty. The squeaky noise has now disappeared, so I stil...

Re: Squeaky suspension
Thanks guys, I did wonder whether it was the engine mountings or similar, but why would it squeak when the steering wheel is turned? At the moment all I see is my wallet emptying.

Squeaky suspension
The old girl is starting to make funny squeaking noises on the near side front. Everytime I turn the steering wheel, go over a bump something squeaks. It's not the control arms, as I had her up on a ramp at ATS, to have new tyres fitted, myself and the ATS techie, took a good look and could find no ...

Oil in spark plug well.
Changed the spark plugs a few days ago, and found loads of oil floating on top of 2 spark plugs. (No oil in the spark plug housing, just floating on the white ceramic parts.) (1.8 ADR engine) The 2 that are closest to the bumper I think the first one is the number 1 plug. The furthest 2 (nearest the...

Auto lock central locking
I have had on going problems with the central locking on my 1998 B5, only the RHS doors lock from the inside, I have to push the door card button 2 or 3 times before all the doors lock, I have learned to live with that. The other problem I have, is when the doors are all open, the car locks itself a...

I replaced both off side upper control arms, only one needed replacing, but I thought while I'm down there, may as well do both. A surprisingly easy job to do. She now ride like new.

They tested it on a skyline, so it must work .
I've seen those magnetic things before, I wish I'd thought of it.

Re: suspension arms
Considering that they had not tightened all the bolts properly in the first place, I'll put it down to shoddy workmanship, and if l do try to do the driverside myself, l'll follow instructions verbatim, or take her to a VW min dealer, at least you'd think they would know what they are doing. No sens...

Re: suspension arms
That's exactly what I was led to believe, that with any change to any suspension component, the tracking should be checked and or reset, I have read this in manuals, and been told by other mechanics. I also had a look at the Bentley Publishers website, and they also say that the tracking should be p...

Re: suspension arms
Thanks for the reply, they must have done something to the suspension, because when I left the car went round in circles, without me turning the steering wheel, and before they worked on it she went straight as an arrow.

suspension arms
I was charged about £140 to have these replaced on the passenger side, I was advised by the friendly chap at ATS, that the drivers side ones also need replacing sooner rather than later, is it necessary to take the entire assembly out, as per the "how to" section. Or can it be done withou...

Eicher Brake Disks
Not sure if this is the correct place to put this, l have a brand new set of these disks, car parts 4 less, delivered the wrong size, and their returns are next to useless. So if anyone wants them, I'll accept what l paid for them £25.00. They are 280.2mm diameter and 25mm thick. Because of the wei...

Had an interesting experience with my thermostat this week. Temperature gauge suddenly dropped to zero, and wouldn't move. I thought it was the coolant temperature sender again, changed it no change. Then I decided to check the thermostat itself, and discovered that the pin that connects the thermos...
