Westfalia make a detachable towbar for B5.5 which is easy to fit and is not visible when the swan neck is removed and the socket swung up into the bumper

Re: Alarm again
The door switches are a favorite problem area, they are part of the door lock mechanism so not easy to get to. The link below describes how to remove the locks, and the switch shown on the red and blue wires is the door switch.

Re: servo identification
On the left hand side of the illustration under item no1 (the servo), the first one is for left hand drive. The second one is right hand drive up to approx chassis no 3B-2-010 026, the third is from chassis no 3B-2-010 027 approx. AFAIK. Or go and ask at your local dealer. They are not all bad. Oldgit

Re: Throttle Body reset?
If the car has a throttle cable, with the bonnet open. Turn the ignition on BUT do not start the engine, you will hear the throttle body buzzing, after about 30 seconds the buzzing will stop and a click will be heard. That should reset your throttle body, restart the engine.

Re: Gear/Clutch issue
If there are no leaks, you could try wedging the clutch pedal down overnight (unless your'e using it), sometimes you can get an airlock in the cylinder, holding the pedal down can help release this. Then give it a try it in the morning. Failing that it's looks like a box out job

Re: My first Passat and I've had enough....
On B4's there are two earth leads that connect to the rear of the cam cover, these often break and cause havoc with the instruments, worth a quick look to make they are ok.
