Thanks but unfortunately I'm up in Stoke. Still it's useful to know they can change the steering lock, might save me a couple of hundred quid.

Having the same problem. Phoned VW customer care this afternoon and was told that they log every call and knew nothing about any steering lock problems. Anyone know if changing the steering lock rather than the whole steering column is a viable option?
