Dashboard dimmer switch.
Looking for a power source to light up my boost gauge I followed some advice and removed the dimmer switch, now I cant get it back in place. Any ideas how it fits. It was a waste of time anyway because there was not enough room to tap into the wires. I got power from the 12v socket next to the ashtr...

Re: Convert 12v cig lighter plug to 12v switched live
It is something to do with powering it down for the dash cam, it only needs 5v not 12v that the cigar lighter lead will give out.

Re: Convert 12v cig lighter plug to 12v switched live
I did a hard wire on the one I have, (nextbase) the only bit of cable that is visible is about an inch of it above the mirror. Apparently it is a big no no to use the cigar lighter plug/lead, could be just sales talk but I wanted the wiring hidden anyway so went for it. I will try and find the reaso...

Ditched the chinese fake head unit,WOW.
For over five years I have had a Veyron head unit in the Passat. Looks just the same as a genuine VW one but the radio has always been terrible, the sat-nav was very hit and miss, it had a DVD player but only used it once properly in over five years. Bluetooth was OK. Finally changed it for a genuin...

It should be easy to check with a multi meter. (I say easy, everything is easy when you know how to do it).

Have I spent too much on our car.
We have a 2006 SEL estate with the BWA turbo petrol engine, manual gears, and a good few factory extras. Owned it for five and a half years and it has been brilliant, never missed a beat, 1500 miles on holiday to France in a week, easy. I have spent on the car and have an impressive? stack of invoic...

Re: A proud day today
Ours is the same, it has the BWA petrol engine. In over five years the only bulb I have replaced is a sidelight in a replacement (non-genuine) headlight. Don't get me wrong I have spent lots of money keeping on top of things, nothing Passat specific just stuff that could be replaced on any car, shoc...

Re: Thinking of doing a big euro road trip
You are over thinking it, just forget it and put your slippers back on and watch the telly. :ymhug: Seriously, just do it, buy something roomy, go through all the comsumables and just set off. I know I should not say it and will get slated but I would choose a series 1 Honda CRV. We had one for seve...

Re: I wish I had gone the next day.
It never ends! I wanted to get the tracking checked after hitting what ever I hit, I thought I would have the wheels balanced while I was there as I thought the place that did the tyres had not done it properly. There is a well known fast fit place just around the corner who have been ok in the past...

Re: I wish I had gone the next day.
That is my outlook on life generally. I said exactly the same thing to the wife.
The front tyres had done 20k miles so were heading for replacement, not yet but they were getting there. I had a new pair fitted on the Saturday.

Re: 333K Mileage (and whether to keep going)
We are mad aren't we for getting sentimental about our cars. It is just a lump of metal really.
I would be gutted if anything terminal (bad crash etc) happened to our car.

I wish I had gone the next day.
So I bought an R line front splitter, the seller said collect only, I arranged it for Saturday. During the week I thought I fancy just dossing about on Sat' I will collect it Friday night. The journey involved a really dark road over the moors, the weather was ok when I set off but went down hill ra...

No actual upgrade needed only on the visual side.
Seen a place selling re-con calipers at a decent price, plus they will do any colour. Might have a look at them.

Red brake calipers.
Next thing I might change on the Passat is the brake calipers , as a bit of an upgrade I might go with red ones as MK5 GTi or Octavia VRS. Would they be the same fitment etc? I know I could just paint the current ones but the car has done 140k and for the price of them I might as well change them fo...

Re: Back box replacement
Avoid the 'budget' range of exhausts from VW dealers and TPS. They are utter rubbish!
I have had a 'rubbish' TPS exhaust on our Passat for four years now. The front flexi went recently but that was not replaced at the time, the rest of the system is still going strong.

Name and praise a company?
Am I allowed to name and praise a company on here. We are making our annual trip to the antique fair at Lille, I have been spending on the Passat lately and thought it was in fine fettle for the 800 miles ahead of us. Well four days before we were due to set off the flexi on the down pipe started bl...

That is because he has fitted an aftermarket closure system. The motorised boot was not a factory option on a B6 afaik. Cheers, Mitch... Curious... :-? That stacks up, as the option codes in the book don't mention a powered tailgate: B0N = Component parts set, complying with vehicle type for Great ...
