OK FYI according to ECP the break was 3b3..00001. Hopefully they will send correct kit.
Gsf show wrong kit from there up to 2005 and not interested in fixing it.

When did timing belt tensioner change to friction, 2002?

Gsf have sent me hydraulic style belt kit. Mine is later friction type. They are adamant mine should be hydraulic type. Anyone have access to the Vin or engine number change?. Mine is AWX engine from June 2002.

Re: Tyre Wear??

I had a set of Nexens, they weren’t great but in particular they didn’t like hard cornering- rounded the shoulders very quickly. I wouldn’t rate them as mid range at all. They were on the car when i got it. They were replaced with Michelins. However I probably got 20000 out of them, so maybe you sho...

I’m on about 7 years and 50k, INA belt is visually very good eg no cracking around teeth visible when it bends backwards around idler. I’ll get around to it soon, but i reckon youve got a couple of years yet without fear. Part of the equation is how you drive. In my book the worst thing is stalling ...

Re: 2002 TDI estate scrapping, what to do??

The key to cars that will be worth something in the future is either that they are high end or paradoxically were very common at one stage. I.e mum or dad or uncle or a neighbour had one. This explains why an essentially poo car like 1600 70’s Capri can be worth 12k or more. In every era I’ve lived ...

Re: 2002 TDI estate scrapping, what to do??

In the durability/economy stakes the PD Tdi is a hard act to follow, if it were me Id buy another and keep the current one for spares. But that’s not applicable in your case Ebay can be hard work and none of your parts can be described as low mileage. Currently a lot of these are coming off the road...

Yes just disconnect and plug the line, you won’t look back. If need be put a dummy line on the egr so that its not visually disconnected at Mot time.

The front pistons are hollow. The prongs have nothing to engage in. Also the prongs can be fitted facing the other way. Trust me they’re handy for the fronts.

Thats a standard looking tool. It will work fine. Yes clockwise to wind piston in.

They are also a handy tool to push in the front pistons when changing pads, even though the front are not threaded.

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

A lot egrs on pd seem to weep a bit , but i think its just an accumulation in the system, as similar can be found around inter cooler. If you disconnect and plug the vacuum feed then you’ve taken it out of the equation, so no worries, unless its stuck open , which i dont think is common. Dont buy an...

Re: Power steering full lock noise??

Its hard to imagine it getting contaminated, theres a cooler but it’s separate from the coolant rad. Maybe someone had the front end off sometime and some crud got in.

Id just keep an eye on it and be happy to have found a cure.

Dont think id ever want to change a rack on one of these..

Must be different secrrets out there. :D Since here in Holland the well kept secret about supermarket oils is that those are just recycled used oils mixed together, filtered, cleaned, and got new additives added too. My old crappy cars ran great on them. As long as I changed it often enough. When I...

Re: Basic Gearbox Removal Guide.. On Yer Back Style..

Just a note on this procedure, i had the engine/tranny out of an audi a4 with awx/fec today and found the cap head bolt on the gbox linkage was 8mm. Not sure if its an audi thing or if the original procedure has a typo saying 6mm?

Anyway the write up was very helpful.

Re: Alternator Ribbed Belt Tensioner bolt size

That long one cap head one? approx 115mm. It goes into the casting and out into free air so a few mm either way won’t matter unless its long enough to hit some ribbing behind. When i say 115 i mean to the convention that excludes the bolt head itself. Just the shank. Cant tell how much thread on it ...

Unbolting turbo from manifold- tips?

The middle nut on the stud that faces upwards, my ring spanner just happens to clash with the vacuum unit. This is a scrapper that i only get to once a fortnight, so fornext time Im wondering if a 1/4 drive socket and short wobble bar may be the answer. Also the rear nut seems awkward.. What do you ...
