Re: Warm weather - why is my gear change so much smoother?

Nope, I mistyped. I have changed the oil - that helped the sticky gears completely. But not the clunkyness.

In fact I think you helped me pick the correct oil in a previous thread!

Warm weather - why is my gear change so much smoother?

As above really. When I bought my estate last January the gear changes were clunky and sticky. Gearbox oil completely sorted the sticky, but the clunky has remained. Especially from first to second. But all gears to a lessening extent the higher up you go. However, now we've had a warm spell of 25 d...

Re: HIGHLINE PLUS 2.0 TDI 170 MPG POOR

Is it necessarily a problem? Has it always been this way, or have you noticed a recent drop? Surely it also depends how you drive it. Would you say you drive in a way to maximise mpg (eg leave a good gap to the car in front, don't go above speed limit, etc, etc). I have the same engine and do a simi...

Re: New head unit?

I've been in a similar situation for nearly a year now, just can't decide which way to go... OEM vs after market. I'd much prefer OEM but they can be really expensive and often need canbus mods to work. I'm really tempted by the pumpkin android units on Amazon. Seem to pack a lot of bang for the buc...

Wow, that's a lot. :-o I'd be tempted to get the angle grinder out, cut out the old door and replace with a second hand one for less than half the cost. I'm joking of course, but my stinginess does make me have these thoughts!! Have you tried Mike at Listers Seat for the lock? Just send him a PM wit...

Re: Rear door won't open

The locks can often stick and need a knock of some sort to release it. I've seen various comments about hitting the handle, but I found by 'twanging' the handle (by that I mean a quick movement of opening the handle fully with my finger tips and letting it go quickly in order that it springs back qu...

A truly legendary engine! I'm sure it had more than 130 and I'd get 55mpg while ragging it. How I miss my old Toledo. If it wasn't a saloon I would have kept it. Damn kids!

Re: Turbo issues!

I certainly wouldn't want you to just take our words for it, please do get it checked, but I can add my experience of a turbo which whistled the whole 5 years and 60k miles I owned an ASZ 1.9 (it had 120k on the clock when I bought it). Never gave me any bother and still working just fine when I sol...

Jarek wrote: Fri Jun 30, 2017 9:30 am One way to check is get under the car and have a good poke at the inner rods coming out of the rack. If you hit them from top or bottom you should get your culprit noise.
I know what I'll be doing tonight! Will report back with the diagnosis.

Great feedback, thanks very much.

Is that aimed at the Quantum oil, the Asda oil, or just a general comment?!

The Quantum and Asda oil both meet or exceed 507 spec. If it's just a general comment, then yeah, agreed :-bd

Re: Front Suspension Knock

I have exactly the same knocking sound. It only happens at low speeds (<10mph) and is worst over uneven ground. When I'm driving along even ground and quickly steer from side to side (imagine an F1 driver warming his tyres) it's extremely pronounced. Having been under the car and had a good old look...

Because a manufacturer specification is a specification like ACEA is an oil specification . https://www.micksgarage.com/blog/a-rant-about-engine-oil/ Cool I can fill up my bath again ! Exactly, it meets the specification. What more is there? I've used Asda oils for years and never had an issue. Sam...

With continuous use, the aircon smell continued to reduce to the extent that I felt only the filter change was required. Sure enough, no more smells now.

It's a shame I didn't get to try the 'bomb', but the aircon in the wife's Jazz is smelling so I'll give it a go in there.

Re: EDIT Was small fan now no radiator fan's working! HELP PLEASE.

I am no expert on these matters, but the obvious next step does seem to be checking the operation of the fans themselves. As jasimog said in his replies, it could be the brushes. Did you carry out the check he suggested? A quick search shows replacement fans are around £200, so worth your while spen...

Having had the aircon going for the last few days, the musty smell has reduced significantly.

However, there's still a bit of a pong there for the first 30secs or so after start up and the bits I ordered turned up yesterday so I'll run the anti bac and change the filter and report back.

That's an idea. Although thinking about it, isn't the cabin filter located in the passanger footwell? If so, and thats where the cannister is placed to spew it contents, then that will be the end result anyway.

Smelly Aircon

The warmer weather has exposed a new issue with my car - I've got the common musty/mouldy smell when I turn the aircon on (since buying the car in Jan/Feb I've had it on auto without the a/c on, probably my first mistake). I'll be changing the cabin filter as it's cheap, easy to do and just makes se...
