Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

Question - is there an ignition amplifier on my car? B5 has them B5.5 doesn't . You can check if it has , look on top of the airbox , it sits on the lid in a rubber grommet . Looks like this http://images.google.com/imgres?q=1.8t+ignition+control+module&num=10&hl=en&tbo=d&biw=1366&a...

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

No I'm not happy! How can a car react so badly (cutting out, failing to restart etc) one minute then be fine the next? Maybe it was say a blockage in one of the injectors, but that woulndt cause the bad restart. (having to wait 2 or 3 minutes to get it to start again) All that has happened is the co...

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

Its normally just the electrode that will wear down so there should not be any plugs pieces in the head, If a valve was stuck you'l notice the smoke. ECU may think its still has problems.... Try a ECU reset disconect the battery and touch the wires together see if that helps (its free and easy if i...

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

More info, yes I am clutching at straws!

Had blocked plenum drains and a dead battery. Water was halfway up the battery.
Could some water have got into electrics? Battery terminals touching metal at same time fried the ECU?

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

Now much worse! Cutting out and will not idle. I changed the coil packs, admittedly for a secondhand set but those did work fine before I changed them. I am now worried that when the two spark plugs burnt out a piece of them or pieces are still in the combustion chamber or stuck in a valve or any ot...

Engine question

Might need a new engine but not sure what my options are. My car is a 2000 W reg 1.8t Sport. Now looking at the list in above thread that looks like its an AWM engine. My question is am I limited to this engine type? I mean all I will want is the block and head to swap into mine, so can other engine...

What is CEL light?

When it cut out on me ALL the dash lights came on and that event did not show up on the code reader.

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

Garage just rang and it seems the two of the spark plugs have broken up!
Hoping now that no bits have gone into the engine!
Fingers well crossed!

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

I changed the battery recently when the old one died due partly to the plenum drains being blocked. So yes I took the new battery off again to clean out the drains. So that probably explained that code. It was deleted and then checked again and it didnt come back. So no codes that give a clue to the...

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

Got codes checked and none that would cause this problem!

There was one - 18 0 1 0

No other codes.

So doing that was a waste of time!

Thanks for the helpful suggestions.

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

Because at this point in time I would rather let a garage I trust do the work. I commute to London daily and dont have a lot of time to mess around with cars. I just wanted somebody to tell me not to worry its not gonna cost you a fortune its a simple fix! Dont think that will be the case but whatever

Re: NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

Very serious now! Tried to go to Tesco's in it last night and didnt get very far! Cut out at a big roundabout and was very difficult to get started again. ALL the lights on the dash came on and was sluggish to turn over, but managed to get it started again after about 10 tries! So it will have to go...

NOW SERIOUSLY Bad Misfire

Car developed a bad misfire after standing with engine running. (1.8T) Was only a short local trip and was fine when engine cold. Felt like one cylinder not firing, but would recover itself at higher revs. Also sonded like a diesel all the time! No the coil packs are fairly new, about a year ago, sp...

Re: MPG Readings

I have never changed the settings on that so dont know why its now different. Unless due to the battery change it has gone to a default mode. Will have to get my manual out to change the settings! It did actually go above 200mpg! The display showed no numbers just dashes. And that happened a couple ...

MPG Readings

The live one in the dash. I recently changed the battery and now I am getting wildly different readings 200mpg one minute 9mpg the next! I realise that my history has gone but how long will this last? Did about 90 miles on Saturday on a run to Bristol and back and a couple of local trips and its sti...
