I've got one of the cheaper android units, or rather I currently don't... Paid for it all to be hooked up professionally, save me cackhandedly ripping any trim, and he tested it before install & announced that dab didn't work. Got him to fit it all anyway as the xda forums suggested it could be ...

So all the bits have arrived, and tomorrow I'll be getting them fitted professionally in Nottingham!

Was quite happy to do it all myself, but the Mrs said she'd rather I got someone else to on the Passat as she knows if I start getting frustrated I'll end up messing up the trim

Well as it happens there was a Pumpkin head unit on sale as part of the Amazon Prime Day : http://amzn.to/29t3N6s Only 7" & Android 4.4, rather than the 8" / 5.1 unit i had been looking it, but then it was only £175 compared to £305 :) And then there was an extra £5 off the DAB unit...

I found cheaper windscreen dab areals have better reception than oem fitted one. Windscreen mounted is best option, no drilling required. There is OEM VW Helix Sub available which fits instead of spare wheel. You will have to loose spare wheel but sound quality is pretty good. Have been looking aro...

And today I finally got around to routing the extension cable behind the head unit! Tried removing the glove box initially and that failed; then just kept pushing the wire through until I could eventually see it above the glove box & pull it through!

Managed to take the housing out today, and the rubber phone protector is easily removed. The housing around this has plenty of space for wires to pass through. Make a small hole in the housing and feed it round the back like originally planned. No-one will ever see the hole unless you sell it on and just buy a replacement part you cut the hole in if it bothers you that much. Got Bluetooth but cannot see the Waze app when the phone is in the glovebox. Also cannot choose playlists without the handset, or switch from music to podcasts.

Hi Red, you could try buying this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351413170260?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT and disconnecting the MDI from the back of the head unit, and plugging that in. Then use your phone USB lead and see if it works? Hmmm not guaranteed to work with...

Took delivery of my Passat yesterday, and the head unit is HW version H73, software 0407.

The maps have arrived and the dealer is installing them for me now (they had car back to change two tyres) so I will update this once I get the car back to see if the versions have changed!

So I picked up my car yesterday, and despite the dealer including the MDI->lightning cable that I needed, I spotted a rather large problem... Once I get my phone mount, I intend to have that above the top vent next to the steering wheel, and thus the power needs to come in alongside the head unit on...
