Re: Weekend Wheel hub Carrier emergency

Yes both the bolts are present. I tightened them both up i.e. the one that tightens the track rod end in the hub carrier and the one that bolts vertically into the end of the track rod end shaft. Neither tightened much and initially it felt like it stopped the movement but it hadn't. I just did some...

Re: Weekend Wheel hub Carrier emergency

Hiya Ray, yes very sure it was done both times. First time I saw both the old track rod ends on the garage floor and it drove great and silent for about a week after then started making noise again. I thought it was something else to begin with, obviously. It then failed its MOT on that track rod en...

Weekend Wheel hub Carrier emergency

Hi, My car has eaten its second track rod end in two weeks (Two different part sources and two different mechanics) so I'm having to conclude I have a problem with the hub carrier being worn inside where the track rod end sits. Any other opinions on this are welcome? I dont suppose there is some kin...

VCDS Problem

I recently found my vcds disk and cable I bought some years ago when I had a problem and then promptly forgot about. I installed the disk on a windows 10 laptop and gave it a go yesterday on my car. Obviously things didn't go well as I'm posting about it today. :D Anyways it wont work properly (not ...

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

Arggggh right got it I stand corrected. I followed a video removing the top hose visible with the engine cover on which I guess is for the egr valve. The other plugs into the end of the anti shudder valve I think? So I really need to go back and run the car with the other pipe off to exclude the pos...

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

Thanks Ray, just to go back to my removing the hose from the egr does that just disable the anti shudder part of the egr? It wouldn't affect the exhaust gas recirculation would it? I guess Ill have to check the cam out although from the bit of research Ive done it seems wear enough to cause problems...

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

So I tried removing the top hose from the valve today and blanked it off. It didn't make any
difference to my running problem which remained exactly the same.

Neither did it appear to make any other difference to running either.

Not sure if this tells me anything though, anyone?

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

Thank you Ray. So long as I'm understanding correctly which way is open and which is closed I think its in its open position all the time. Am I correct in thinking the valve is open when the metal stopper / paddle for want of better word is held against the egr body by the spring and that closed is ...

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

Its 173k + No it hasn't. I might not get my way but I'm hoping to keep the cost down. I love the old girl shes the most useful car Ive ever had even running not so great but its more likely I'll have to put up with the running problem for some time rather than look at splashing out right now. I'll b...

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

I didn't have much of a view of it in failing light and being on my own my view was blocked a bit but I'm pretty sure it didn't move at all when I turned the engine off. I dont know if its related to my running problem but it does shudder more now than what I remember it being like when I first got ...

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

I had the car scanned today and no faults were shown for the engine. I popped the engine cover in the few minutes of daylight I had to take a look at the egr and its pretty oily. I dont know if its relevant to my running problem but I noticed whether the car was switched off or ticking over the pist...

Re: Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

Thanks for the reply folks. Currently going to give a few tanks of diesel injector cleaner a go. I tried a one off go some months back but going to give it a go again as the problem seems to have lessened somewhat very recently of its own accord. I just looked up the egr disable and I guess it cant ...

Running problem 1.9 tdi estate

So finally finally I managed to get the new suspension fitted on my car. Well when I say I that just means I managed to find an afternoon I could do without the car and someone to slot me in and fit it for me. Feels good so far (somethings still creaking but it can wait) So I still have this running...

Re: Front spring fitting?

Thank You, unfortunately at the moment I cant even compress the springs enough to fit them because the Hilka compressors I bought are jamming on the side of the springs centimetres before they are compressed enough to fit

Re: Help with front spring fitment please

Thank You. I await the sellers opinion on the question but tend to think your correct. The problem seems to be with the design of the compressors, no matter which way I position them on the springs one of them eventually jams on the outside edge of the spring. At which point its game over. Thanks ag...

Help with front spring fitment please

I recently bought Bilstein B4 shock absorbers x4 for my 2002 B5.5 estate. I just wanted a good quality set. I enquired if they fit with standard springs as I didn't want to lower my car. So yesterday I had a go at compressing my new shiny KYB springs with my shiny new Hilka heavy duty spring compres...

Front spring fitting?

So at long long last I believe I have all the bits to build up and fit my front struts. (I'll detail my painful journey with a particular company later) I have a couple of questions please. I have new KYB springs does it matter which way up they go as they seem to look the same either end? Do I just...

Re: Advice or bits needed

Thanks North and Joelio. It currently looks like I'm sorted and waiting for delivery. However there were simply no listings anywhere on ebay for these bits (or at least that I could find) There may have been a seller somewhere on ebay that had them but despite loads of searching I had no luck. Finge...

Re: Rear strut bump stop gaitor fitment

Brilliant thank you. So I now have most of the bits I need for the front and rear suspension swap. Luckily the incorrect bump stops and gaitor's I was sent for the rear have turned out to be the correct ones for the front :-) The diagram for the front did raise one issue in as much that the seller s...

Re: Rear strut bump stop gaitor fitment

Hi Mclee and thanks for your help again. The cars a 2002 and I've bought all new bits as I'm trying to minimise down time caused by not being able to break down the old shocks or discovering buggered parts, and ending without my dog bus which I need for work every day. The new shocks come with the r...

Re: Rear strut bump stop gaitor fitment

Ive messaged them on ebay with pictures of the bags they came in and the parts numbers. They are a VW specialist and seem very good but we all make mistakes.

I guess it could be the wrong mounts or the wrong bump stops.

Cheers Alan

Rear strut bump stop gaitor fitment

So now my new struts topmounts bump stops and gaitors have arrived but I appear to have a problem. It would seem the bump stops and gaitor should clip together and then the bump stop should be inserted into the top mount. So the bump stop and gaitor clip together but... My problem is the bumpstop is...
