Bowled over as I was with all the responses, for those of you that are remotely bothered, it was the water pump. £400 worse off while they fit a new one.

Thanks for the reply. Today it had stood cold for 2-3 hours and then I drove it 4 miles and the fan came on.... it's going into the garage Monday so they can investigate the coolant leak. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the reply. The water pump wasn't replaced at the same time as the cambelt. I also have a dashboard that creeks. It comes from behind the steering column and on the silver dash trim. It drives me insane. The only way to stop it is to push down on it with your fingers. If anybody has any tips I'm all ears....

I bought my 2.0 Sport Tech Bluemotion about 3 weeks ago. It's done 44k with 2 VW dealer stamps in the book. I paid £9.5k. It's immaculate inside and out so I'm really impressed. I'm the 2nd owner from new and it's a Sept 2011 '61 plate.
