Re: mk3 golf abs sensors (rear) same for b4 passat?

The sensor itself will almost certainly be the same, but the rears come with the cable attached and that may be a different length. If it is shorter it will not reach through the wheel arch right up to the connector under the rear seat.

Look at the membranes behind the doorcards. Also the luggage bay side window seals - is there damp in the side pods or the spare wheel area?

Re: B4 8v high idle and holding revs

Is there a throttle butterfly damper on the TB (a small diaphragm with a plunger which prevents the throttle from slamming shut)? If there is, try taking it off or adjusting it back, but beware that you may end up with stalling problems. It's there for a reason, probably associated with emissions co...

I support the theory that the pas pump is probably the cause. Mine does the same, has done for years and the assistance is stll ok.

There's a chap on ebay breaking a B4 Passat estate (a VR6 actually, what vandalism !! so it will definitely have electric windows). I seem to recall that he is in Northampton. Maybe he can help.

Re: Car tyre valve popped out.

If the valve was in such bad condition, have a really good look at the tyre as well, not just the depth of tread and the condition of the carcase but the age of the tyre (coded into the moulded info on the tyre wall) Google will find you an article on how to read the codes to get the age of the tyre...

Re: Rear bumper removal.

This is for a B4, but I expect it's the same. Firstly, undo one screw each side, in the rear face of the wheel arch into the side part of the bumper. Then get under the middle of the bumper and undo 3 screws that tie the bumper cover to the underside of the car. There is also a plastic loop each sid...

Re: airbag light burned out again!

Tom, I have a Haynes manual for the B4 and I would guess that there is a wiring diagram in there, I'll have a look. Perhaps you could put a suitable resistor into the circuit to cut down on the current flowing through the bulb. It's surprising that it keeps burning out because it is (hopefully) on f...

I have a B4 with an ABF engine, fitted at the factory. My Haynes manual has some ABF related details in it, and I also have a Peter Russek manual which makes some references. I'll get back with the publication details tomorrow.

Re: Alternator drive belt tensioner

Yes I did, although it turned out not to be just the tensioner pulley but also the water pump which was making the noise. The pulley is cheap and easy to replace, the water pump was again fairly cheap, about £40, but quite complicated to replace because the alternator support bracket has to come of...

Re: B4 electric window problems :(

The driver's door is obviously the one that gets opened and shut most often and the most likely culprit is the wiring loom in the door frame rubber bellows - the wires get broken by constant flexing. Also the multi pin connector to the motor can become a problem and would benefit from being re-seate...

Alternator drive belt tensioner

Has anyone changed the alternator ribbed drive-belt tensioner roller on a 2.0litre Passat? Mine's a 16V ABF engine, but I think all 2 litre engines have the same spring-loaded arm and roller mechanism. The part seems to be widely available. Is the fixing bolt left or right hand thread?
Thanks

Re: Steel sunroof question

Speaking as a long-term Corrado owner as well as a B4 owner, you DO NOT want a Corrado sunroof in your car. They are notoriously unreliable, usually will tilt but not slide and end up being replaced with Golf or Passat B4 units. I have never had a problem with the glass B4 unit.

Re: Oil light flashes and car dies....

Could also be a faulty relay - the fuel pump relay is a favourite suspect for intermittent cutting off. We can be certain that it's not the crank position sensor !!

Re: Oil light flashes and car dies....

If the engine stalls for any reason whilst the ignition is on, oil pressure will fall and the warning light will flash. So the question is, what happened first? Stalling (for any number of reasons) or loss of oil pressure?

Tom, good news on the pass. Just sorry about the bad advice I gave you on the ignition switch; unaccustomed as I am to automatics, I didn't consider the selector relay.

Mr Maclee, congratulations. You certainly know your stuff! And your articles are always worth a read.

"Ignition wire" ? Not quite sure what you mean.

This sounds to me like something associated with the starter motor/solenoid or the ignition switch.

Re: Got ready to take car for MOT and it would not start!

I second the ignition switch theory as a distinct possibility. Also make absolutely certain of the wiring to the starter motor; I know that you have had the starter off recently (because I was there at the time). There should be a direct feed from the battery to the starter motor/solenoid with no sw...

Re: ignition switch replacement

If you can hear a relay chattering, you should be able to feel it as well just by putting a finger tip onto it, going from one to the other. But obviously that may not rule out the ignition switch until you replace the relay and see if the problem has been sorted out or not. Incidentally, the X-reli...

Re: ignition switch replacement

I would doubt that the X-relief relay is the problem. That would cut out the likes of ABS pump, wipers, headlights, heater blower, radio etc., but it wouldn't cut the ignition circuit or the fuel pump as its purpose is to provide maximum voltage to those during start cranking by cutting out the othe...
