Just to complete this, I have now soorted out the front right winder. It turned out to be a poor connection to the motor rather than a fault with the motor itself or the regulator. The gearbox on my 16v ABF engined B4 has a gearbox type CTM. Is a CDA gearbox from a Golf GTi Mk3 16v compatible? The only time I ever took out an instrument system was on a Mk 2 Golf, and there is a voltage regulator diode in there which can give problems. Maybe it's the same on a Passat.
