PS
Another dodge, if you have long/chimpanzee arms, is just to reach across the car to press down the lock indicator button on the passenger side front door.

DOOR LOCK ERRATIC
Year 2000 B5 petrol 1.8 Passat estate. Get in car, start engine, press 'lock all doors" switch on driver side door. All locks close correctly except the front passenger door, where the lock indicator button often stays up instead of staying down. Rather than a long messy job of repairing the lo...

Re: STICKING HAND BRAKE ON B5
Thanks for the various contributions/suggestions. I did take the VW to the IRLAM workshop and they quickly found that the pads in the rear brake were not free to move in the calliper. Caused by corrosion etc. Maybe not surprising after 17 years and 69,000 miles, as all brakes still had the original ...

STICKING HAND BRAKE ON B5
SORRY TO ADMIT THAT I WRONGLY POSTED THIS TOPIC IN B4 FORUM. The problem has now got worse - after just 5 miles the wheel is HOT. When jacked up, rear RH wheel is hard to turn. Hand brake cable and lever at brake seems to move in a sensible fashion when handbrake is applied and removed. Could it nee...

Re: broken autodim mirror MOT fail?
Has anyone found a moderately priced accessory rear view mirror to clip on over the fail auto dim original mirror?
Replacing the original auto dim mirror is VERY expensive and looks to be tricky for an amateur mechanic.

STICKING HAND BRAKE ON B4
My year 2000 VW Passat auto estate has done 66,000 miles. Went in to local VW agent for MOT. Passed OK with no problems reported. Drove home about 15 miles mix of urban and rural roads not exceeding 50 mph. Put car in garage - noticed bad burning smell. Checked wheels and disks for temperature - all...

INTERIOR AUTO DIM MIRROR
Year 2000 B4 estate "SPORT" ( presume that model name was a VW joke? )came from new with an auto dipping interior mirror, which was very good and convenient. But now the auto dim seems to not work. A new VW replacement costs about £200 plus fitting. I am reluctant to try fitting it myself...

Re: Brake fluid bleed nipples US.
I forgot to add the warning that prevention is better than a cure. So BEFORE your brake bleed nipples get stuck, remove them and add a light coating of KOPR-KOTE or similar anti seize grease to threads. NOT too much - you don't want grease to get into the brake fluid system, which is known to be fus...

Brake fluid bleed nipples US.
2000 VW Passat petrol auto. The local VW agents can no longer change brake fluid as the bleed nipples cannot be moved. Presumably corroded into the callipers? They refused to use heat. Changing the front callipers seems possible at around £90 exchange each. Rear callipers are more costly. Once I de...

AUTOMATIC GEARBOX OIL CHANGE
Haynes Manual for my 2000 VW 1.8 20V petrol Passat recommends changing oil in auto gearbox every 40,000 miles or 4 years. VW do not give any recommendation. After 60,000 miles and 14 years it seemed sensible to change the oil in 4 speed auto box, and while the car was being worked on, also change oi...

Right I'm back home now so can do some links for you VW still quote what ZF originally said about the oil "that it should last the lifetime of the gearbox" and never updated their paperwork to bring it in line with the correct updated service specs brought in by ZF in 2004. currently ther...
