Re: STOP. Check Coolant

Aaaargh. Ran the car for 60 miles or so today, and...oil in the coolant.

I know that knackered head gasket is the likeliest problem now. Anything else a possibility? Cracked block perhaps?

Engine has only done 74k and has FSH from new. Bit of bad luck?

Re: STOP. Check Coolant

I've had a local garage bypass the Oil Cooler by directly connecting the two water pipes. They've also flushed the cooling system once - the expansion tank still has a fair bit of oil in it. I've filled the cooling system with plain old water. Anyway, all seemed ok til about 15 miles down the road, ...

Do you know if there are any guides on how to check the oil cooler?

Thanks,

Re: STOP. Check Coolant

I may have found the culprit to this. The oil dipstick is showing over full, I'm guessing the increase in oil pressure is causing the oil to bleed out of the gaskets into the coolant.

So, any ideas what to do to fix this?

Thanks,

Lee

STOP. Check Coolant

I just received the message above on the dash. Upon checking the coolant (which was suppsedly flushed about 10 months ago) I see it is brown/black sludge. I'm hoping it's as a result of a mix of G12/G11, but am aware it could mean Head Gasket on the way out. I was going to attempt a coolant flush, b...

Boot openers

I think there's a problem with my boot, it's been like this since I bought the car last year. I'm guessing what is supposed to happen when you press the boot opener on the key fob is that the pistons are supposed to spring it open. However, on mine, it's quite an effort (particularly for my Wife) to...

2000 1.9 TDI PD130 S, 49k miles, £5000 in Sept 2007.

I've owned various cars, MX5, Ford Explorer, WRX from new, Evo8 from new; I can honestly say all things considered, that the Passat is the best car purchase I've ever made.

Just to complete this thread, after replacing the air filter and replacing the MAF, all is now well.

Attached is a graph showing spec v actual intake pressure since the fixes.

Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Re: Anyone experienced this before?

Yes AMM==MAF. Sounds similar to my symptoms, at about 15% throttle I tend to get more power, or at least smoother power.
VagCom confirmed it's a broken MAF, I'm just about to fit another.

So is AMM the same as MAF?

Locating MAF

I'm trying to track down a MAF Sensor for my X-plate 2001 1.9 TDI 130PD. Part ID of the sensor itself (not the housing) is F 00C 2G2 032, (other IDs on there are 888 29 2D and PBT GF30K). Been to my VW dealer and they will only sell the sensor and housing in one, pointless replacing the housing thou...

Engine Cover

I think I must have overtorqued one of the nuts on the engine cover, and now it is just spinning when I tried to undo it (bottom left). I now can't remove the engine cover - any ideas on what to do?

Thanks,

Re: 17964 Diagnostic Code

I think the MAF is totally dead - most likely because of the ineffective Air Filter allowing poo to get all over it. Unplugging the MAF results in the same reading as when it's plugged in (i.e. flatlining at around 550). Going to take the plunge and get a new one. Are they typically sold with the ho...

Re: 17964 Diagnostic Code

I've just hooked up vag-com and read the codes since replacing the air filter. No more 17964! I do have a 16485 (implausible MAF reading). Doing a reading on 010, it looks like the MAF isn't working at all, 3rd gear pull showed a constant reading of 539. I shall try cleaning the MAF, but it seems li...

Re: TURBO CUTTING OUT !!!

There could be leaks or airflow problems all the way back to the box & filter. I had a slightly ill-fitting filter and was getting this problem.

Replaced it and I've now got full boost.

Re: 17964 Diagnostic Code

Agreed, I don't think it's the vac pipes, I've checked them fairly well and as you say, the VNT actuator is moving fine. Will measure the MAF at idle/boost. What's the best way to check the boost/intercooler pipes? I've tried getting underneath and spraying wd40 around while running test 011, but wa...

Re: 17964 Diagnostic Code

I did the 01-Engine, 04, 011 Test (simulates 3rd gear pull). N75 appears to be working fine, VNT rod moves freely. I'm not sure whether I can hear a leak - don't know what a good Passat sounds like. I'm now getting Implausible signals from the MAF, so loss of power down low as well now! I drove for ...

engine shouldn't suck down the intake hose like that... seems like lack of boost to me. due perhaps to restricted intake hose upstream... what's the airfilter like? Airbox free of leaves etc.? Re: 17964 Diagnostic Code

what exactly is the snorkus? never heard of it - but if its a flexible pipe - is there any chance it could be restricting airflow by collapsing at higher RPM's therefore stopping the necessary quantity of air getting to the turbo? Snorkus - maybe it's just a term used on WRXs. The pipe that gets ai...

17964 Diagnostic Code

Hello all, I've got a problem with my 2001 Passat 130TDI. Plenty of power down low, but around 3k RPM it drops to nothing and no apparent boost until the car is rebooted. VAG-COM is showing a 17964 which from what I hear is fairly common. I've checked most of the pipes from the air box, hotside of t...

If you disconnect that pipe i'm sure you would by pass the MAF so may be that is your problem (the MAF) I've tried disconnecting the MAF (that pipe above was still connected at the time) and it felt like I didn't get any boost at all. I think the pipe I disconnected is the crankcase vent tube (CCV)...

Turbo Pipe?

I've got a 2001 1.9 TDI 130. I'm experiencing what seems to be a leaky turbo system. I feel the turbo up to around 2.5-3k, then it drops to nothing and I basically have no power. If I pull off the throttle a bit I get a slight increase in power. To me, it feels like the turbo is ok until it is at fu...
