Re: Timing belt change on 1999 1.9tdi
I hope you can find a way to get it done. My B5.5 tdi is on 299k And it had it's third cambelt a year or two ago. I think all in it cost around £400 inc water pump etc etc. I just felt the old girl deserved a new belt, and as I do travel a bit around the UK we wanted to feel confident about the bel...

WANTED: Passat wagon rear wiper motor for RHD?
Hello folks. The rear wiper motor has literally burned out on our 1999 Passat Wagon and filled the car with a horrible acrid smell! I have disconnected it for now. We are in France but my brother is visiting from the UK next week. Do I need a specificic RHD one. I seem to recall I replaced the origi...

Re: Timing belt change on 1999 1.9tdi
If you have basic tools and spannering skills you could do it yourself with some guidance. I can send you the proper factory instructions and advise on any tools you need etc. They are available for not too much cost. Would save you probably €500 or so, it’s not that involved a job. You will need V...

Timing belt change on 1999 1.9tdi
Hello all. We have a RHD Passat Wagon 110BHP 1.9tdi. It's overdue a timing belt change but we live in a very rural part of France with few garages. Limoges our nearest city is about 60km away. There is a decent Bosch diesel specialist garage there but they want around €750 for the job. What should w...

Re: Incorrect replacement rear caliper sent out by Autodoc?
Very helpful reply Maclee. I offered the caliper up to the left rear side as well and it won't fit either. definately the wrong part. I must return to Autodoc ad they have sent me details of the correct part which does look identical to the one fitted on the car. After cleaning up the original calip...

Incorrect replacement rear caliper sent out by Autodoc?
As we live in France I normally order parts from Autodoc France. Had a problem recently which was pointed out at the French equivalent of the MOT. Basically the drivers side rear caliper was sticking or the sliders seized as the pads on that side were wearing down much quicker than on the other side...

Re: Cooling fan coming on?
Hi MacLee Thank you for your detailed reply. The air con compressor failed ages ago on our car and living in rural France we couldn't afford a replacement and the work required. I simply removed the belt that drives the compressor. The fan comes on at really random times. Came on today when key was ...

Re: Cooling fan coming on?
Hi Mini Mental Thanks for the advice The gauge on the clocks is bang in the centre where it always is, so don't think it is running hot unless the gauge is faulty too, but could check using the Climatronic. Seems to be running fine. May be just change the fan switch..is it easy? Do I need to drain t...

Cooling fan coming on?
Hello all. I have noticed the last few day that the cooling fan has been coming on even in cooler weather and for short trips? It doesn't stay on for too long, normally about thirty seconds after engine is stopped. Not noticed it before except in very hot weather? Any ideas to what could be causing ...

Winscreen rubber side trim disintegrating?
The rubber/plastic trim which runs down the side of the windscreen on our 1999 Passat estates is breaking up and disintegrating?
It looks like it is bonded to a metal strip below?
I am guessing there is no way to replace it?
It's probably sun damage/age related.
Any thoughts?

Re: WANTED: Parts needed for sprung load cover on 1999 Wagon.
I cannot visualise precisely what you mean as I do not have such a car, but it sounds as if it is 'just' a case of the locating lugs having broken from within the end caps. If that is so, could you perhaps drill through the end caps at the location of the lugs, and then use self-tapping screws or t...

Just bumping this. Does anyone have a spare load cover for a Passat B5 estate? Can you remove the two end caps and send them to france for me. I will cover all costs and what you want for the end caps?

SOLVED!!: How can I prime my TDI after a fuel issue?
Okay sorted now thanks folks for all your advice. After days of failed attempts to start it on on a rainy and cold driveway, I got my wife to tow me in it using our trusty T4 Transporter. Only towed me about 200 metres up the road, let off the clutch and it fired instantly!! :esm :esm :esm Drove it ...

Re: URGENT: How can I prime my TDI after a fuel issue?
Try tow starting it. Put it in second or third and let it turn over for a 500m or more. Okay I am going to try this. Is there any chance of damaging the diesel pump if there is not fuel in it? Also it is not like jump starting where you release the clutch when the car is moving. I just tow it with ...

Re: URGENT: How can I prime my TDI after a fuel issue?
Hi Mini mental So the part on top of the fuel tank accessible from the under the load area is just the fuel gauge sender then? I have just looked in the Haynes manual and you are spot on. So basically the diesel injection pump sucks the fuel from the tank through the diesel filter? When the guy who ...

Re: URGENT: How can I prime my TDI after a fuel issue?
Update: Okay so I cannot see any chewed wires? I had a friend pop over who is quite mechanically minded and into diesel vehicles. He sprayed some easy start into the inlet and the car did fire and splutter and then stop. He reckons it is a fuelling problem. He undid one of the injector nuts and got ...

Re: URGENT: How can I prime my TDI after a fuel issue?
Out of curiosity, you have at least checked the timing belt is still on haven’t you matey? I know it would seem coincidental for both that and a leak off line to be broken at the same time but stranger things have happened. Next best thing as I say is to try and start it with something. Brake clean...

Re: URGENT: How can I prime my TDI after a fuel issue?
Update: Okay so had a break in the weather and I have been able to change the diesel filter. The old one didn't look too bad and had clean fuel in it. I filled up the new filter to the brim and refitted. Cranked the engine over after having the ignition key on for 30 seconds and it just refuses to f...

Re: URGENT: How can I prime my TDI after a fuel issue?
Replacing the fuel filter would be worth a try. My sisters Kia started limping in the freezing weather, and the fault codes showed low fuel pressure. All forum posts suggested a manky fuel filter so we replaced it and all was good again. Diesel becomes thicker as it gets colder, so if the fuel filt...

URGENT: How can I prime my TDI after a fuel issue?
Hi Folks. I posted another thread about this, but really could do with some help today as I cannot start our 1999 1.9 tdi AFN Wagon. It failed to start for the first time ever the other night. Was too dark and wet to really investigate. Checked on Tuesday morning in the day light and it appears a ro...

Re: B5 1.9tdi, non starter?
I’d try and start it on brake cleaner if it was mine. The chances of the pump being bone dry aren’t high so it should have plenty of lubrication for a quick start. This should spin it faster and hopefully pull fuel through from the tank. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I don't have anything like...
