1999 Passat B5 Wagon with LHD headlamps - which size bulbs?

Hello all We have a RHD 1999 Passat Wagon which is registered in France and has LHD standard Passat headlamps fitted. Can anyone tell me what size bulb is required for dip beam? I picked up some bargain Super High Power H1 bulbs in TKmaxx for a couple of quid and want to know if they will fit? Our c...

Re: Solar charging battery whilst away?

I usually disconnect the battery if leaving it for more than about a month, but it's been perfectly fine leaving the battery connected for three weeks in an airport car park. Leaving the solar charger plugged in won't overcharge or damage the battery at all, but do make sure the cigarette lighter s...

Solar charging battery whilst away?

We have a B5 1999 1.9tdi Wagon and also a T4 Transporter. We are heading back to the UK for a month or so from where we live in France and will be travelling in the Transporter. This means our Passat will be left for around a month or so unused. It is pretty sunny where we live in France, even in wi...

Re: 1.9 TDI 110 BHP - Still down on power and bad MPG?

I would have thought that if, as you say the chap is competent, your estimate of 3 to 4 hours is a fair one if he doesn't meet problems such as broken bolts etc. Spoke to the guy today and he reckons on between €200 to €300 max for the job, depending on how well it comes apart. He also suggeste...

Re: 1.9 TDI 110 BHP - Still down on power and bad MPG?

Quite likely the VNT mechanism is coked up in the turbo. Really the only way to fix it properly is to remove the turbo and clean it properly . Mr Muscle is a temporary fix if it works at all as it doesn't clear all the baked on carbon out. I did speak to the Irish guy who looked at the car before a...

Re: 1.9 TDI 110 BHP - Still down on power and bad MPG?

Hi how many miles has the car done ? Just read through the previous thread and you say hasn't gone into limp mode for ages? Did you ever resolve the reason why it went into limp mode or did it just go away. To get 60mpg on these you need to baby them and not rev them too much. However driving like ...

Re: 1.9 TDI 110 BHP - Still down on power and bad MPG?

Bad point is that you haven't done diagnostic scan. There are a lot things that can be faulty. Without scan you can change half car to new bits and nothing may change. You should do turbo cleaning before even changing anything else. Badly working turbo vanes will make over boosting or under boostin...

1.9 TDI 110 BHP - Still down on power and bad MPG?

We have been having a few issues with our 1999 B5 1.9tdi Wagon which I covered in another post. http://www.ukpassats.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=89122 Having been advised to change the coolant temperature sender and thermostat, I have done this and also changed the coolant for new. I used ge...

Re: Issues after thermostat and CTS change?

Was getting worried that I had been supplied a duff genuine thermostat!! I guess the real test will be to take the car for a longer run. We have a 137 mile trip to do at the end of the week so that should test it! Interestingly, when I removed the old thermostat from it's housing (with a cold engine...

Issues after thermostat and CTS change?

After a fluctuating temperature gauge needle and less than perfect running, I recently changed the thermostat, CTS and coolant on our 1999 1.9TDI AFN engine B5 Wagon. Since doing the work the gauge gets up nicely to 90 degrees indicated with around 5-10 minutes of steady driving. All good so far. Ho...

Re: Poor MPG and power - 1.9 TDI AFN

Circulation through expansion tank is very slow, so after few mile trip it may no be hot. And pipes to front radiator should start to heat up only when engine is reached 90° and thermostat start to open. So it sounds that you have done a good job. Get you turbo cleaned with Mr. Muscle stuff as wel...

RIGHT!! My genuine VW thermostat and CTS have arrived from Poland! (ordered via Ebay UK) and delivered to France and I have 5 litres of G12+ compatible pink engine coolant. Re: Climatronic issues!!!

Not with a Passat but I did have exactly the same thing on my 93 Audi 80 some years ago. I found the drain tube, which was roughly behind the left front wheel. On the end of it was a rubber boot that was shaped into a slot at the end, a bit like a pair of lips, which were closed to keep out any muc...

Re: Poor MPG and power - 1.9 TDI AFN

Then maybe better leave it as it is. I don't see point to do some thing but not main thing to sort the problem. I'm giving 80% thatthermostat is making gauge to play. 10% that cts is faulty and 10% that gauge is playing itself. About cts, they are either reading right or wrong. Never seen one which...

Re: Poor MPG and power - 1.9 TDI AFN

Playing gauge can really be caused by thermostat, which can't hold steady temperature any more. Mine is afn engine as well, but like I said, they are changing sensors in 1998 to 1999. In 2000 I have green one. Just do it like I said. Change thermostat and antifreeze first. If gauge is still playing...

The place you have found is right one where sensor is located . But I don't know which colour sensor is for your car. Mine is year 2000, and if I remember correctly, I have a green sensor. About ebay, they can tell a lot, but it can be all bulshit. Previous owner of my car changed oem sensor for so...

Climatronic issues!!!

After three plus years of virtually fault free ownership, our 1999 B5 1.9 tdi 110 SE has caused a few issues recently! One of the problems we have had is that the clima tronic seems to have got a leak. Living in the south west of France the aircon gets used a lot during the summer. Recently we...

Re: Poor MPG and power - 1.9 TDI AFN

Went into the French VW dealer in our local town with chassis number and using my pigeon French managed to get the price for a new CTS. He asked if I had a blue or green sensor and reckoned the part number was 059 919 501 if I needed a blue one? The cost seemed steep at €43.65 euros? Our car is a ...
