Dubber - Interesting points...the test drive was too short to get on to advanced gearbox use. 42 mpg on the Jetta is not too bad though. The test drive on the 2.0 diesel with a warm engine came out at 39 mpg mainly on urban dual carriageway.
Round here you need a big car like a Passat to get respect ...

Some considerations, I think the 1.4 Bluemotion TSI could be better than a 2.0 TDI to replace a year 2000 1.8 Petrol Passat because:

* WhatCar Gave It a Four Star !!!!
* A 1.4 engine is about as powerful as a 1.8 built in 2000 and they worked OK
* The car should be a good bit lighter than in ...

Test drove the DSG today. Smooth drive on open road, was not comfortable with parking manoeuvring. Braking too sharp and starting to move forward or back did not feel well controlled. I definitely prefer a clutch.

The first fires as an initial the particulate filter is clogging. The solution is to drive 5 miles @ 50 mph in third gear.

Looked at the Toyota alternatives. Definitely not vorsprungderktechnik ! Tried hybrid, conclusion higher cost/mile, from 90k miles high chance of £2500 bill for batteries and if the car is over 10 years old, who would do that? Impressive reversing CCTV though.

We drive about 6000 miles pa, a large part of which is London driving. The dealer thinks the diesel could be fine as the diesel filter light comes on....then you have to drive 2 miles @ 50 mph in third. Is this feasible or should I go for the 1.4 petrol version?

The problem is almost certainly the air circ flap motor which could have been damaged by previous leaks round the pollen filter. I have had one instance of a leak causing the control box to get wet in about 2004 and another leak last year nearly did the same thing and was ...

Got a problem with a noise like a pantomime horse is coming from the heater / aircon.
It is a 2000 Registration Passat.

I used to be able to stop the noise by pressing the circulation button which has a circular arrow to either recycle the airflow or allow it straight though.
