just had an idea, the crank sensor has 3 wires, 0v 12v and signal out. I can break into the signal out wire and monitor it with a multimeter when the car is ticking over then when it cuts out i could monitor it whilst cranking the engine to see if there is a difference

on the older ones (mk1&2s) , there were arrow marks at TDC on both sprockets (for when you're doing the timing belt) and on the aux belt pulley, which was the timing mark. Not had cause to check if these are the same, but if so, point the timing gun at those. I'd anticipate it wanting 6 degrees...
