Re: intermitent electrical pro broblem

just had an idea, the crank sensor has 3 wires, 0v 12v and signal out. I can break into the signal out wire and monitor it with a multimeter when the car is ticking over then when it cuts out i could monitor it whilst cranking the engine to see if there is a difference

Re: intermitent electrical pro broblem

ok will try your suggestions, there are three wires to the ignition coil (pattern one) i believe they are 0v 12v and a logic trigger from the ecu. what makes me think it is not the coil is when it happens the rev counter immediately drops to 0, if the coil were to fail surely the ecu will still thin...

Re: intermitent electrical pro broblem

The next time this happens switch on something electrical that is ignition fed, such as wipers or indicator (NOT hazard flashers). Do they work? If they do not work the engine has cut out because the ignition has been effectively switched off, in which case the most likely cause is the ignition swi...

intermitent electrical pro broblem

some time ago I had a problem where the car just wouldn't start, I replaced the dizzy, crank sensor than the ignition coil which fixed things. she's developed another problem now, cruising at sat 2500rpm the rev counter will drop to zero and the engine cuts out. if I leave her about 5 mins then she ...

Re: how to check ignition timing?

on the older ones (mk1&2s) , there were arrow marks at TDC on both sprockets (for when you're doing the timing belt) and on the aux belt pulley, which was the timing mark. Not had cause to check if these are the same, but if so, point the timing gun at those. I'd anticipate it wanting 6 degrees...

Re: how to check ignition timing?

You need a timing light that connects to an HT lead. start the engine and point it at the fly wheel makings. This will tell you what the timing is set to. To adjust the timing you will need to slacken off the distributor clamp and rotate the body of the dizzy to the desired setting you want. As you...

Re: wanted ecu & dizzy

I know you have this error code etc, but have you tried another ignition coil? (sometimes now called a transformer). I have had 3 of these fail and give no spark, but all checked out ok using a meter.... they were breaking down under load. If you have tried another coil with no luck then please acc...

wanted ecu & dizzy

The plot thickens... my B4 passat still wont start, the VAG diagnostic says its the cam sensor (sensor on the dizzy), put a different dizzy on from a breakers yard, the same, no spark, same error code. i've buzzed the wiring from both the crank sensor and the distributor sensor back to the ecu conne...

Re: help! she wont start!

wont start update - well the cam sensor is the hall sensor on the dizzy, I've changed that and still the same fault code so my next port of call is to chase the wire from the dizzy to the ecu, any clues where this is mounted people?

Re: help! she wont start!

wont start update - got my diagnostic lead and software today, plugged it in and 2 faults showed up, 1) lambda probe faulty which I knew about when the gas conversion was done and 2)faulty camshaft sensor! so where is the darn critter? not detailed in the Haynes manual and I cant spot anything obvio...

immobiliser issues

the plot thickens with my no start 1996 2ltr petrol Passat. I noticed a pair of what look like ultrasonic microphones either side of the dash, followed them and found a wireless remote immobilizer, 998 VAG 155, now to be honest I never really noticed any leds on or flashing but the car has run for a...

Re: diagnostic connector

Mine is LHD so it may be different, but there is a blank in the lower corner of the instrument cluster within the dashboard moulding, marked with an emblem of the engine. Pull it out and there is a 16-pin socket. Or maybe under the gearchange gaiter, like on a Corrado - if it is there, you pull the...

Re: help! she wont start!

Not sure if the older cars had one, but I had a MK3 Golf 2.0 and the crank sensor failed which resulted in mysterious cut outs and non starts. It was intermittent to begin but finally gave up. Well that's the route I'm following now, bought a new crank sensor but it looks a bitch to get to! Will se...

Re: help! she wont start!

To check if you got immobiliser just separate key fob and you'll see a small square chip in bottom corner, if it has check connection to immobiliser by tracking wires from ignition switch outer ring to black box under dash. Mine had a loose connection which caused it not to start. i think mines mor...

Re: help! she wont start!

just a common sense assumption but if the fuel is blowing out of the plug hole wouldn't that point towards a cross-threaded plug or possibly even snapped? yeah shouldnt be any gap between plug n head. your lucky you have no spark or you'd have a 4 pot flame thrower. no you missunderstood, i removed...

Re: help! she wont start!

the fuel mist out of the plug hole, i removed a plug and cranked the engine and saw a mist pumped out of the plug hole so there is fuel. I unplugged the central feed from the distributor and plugged this into the removed spark plug (direct link to the ht coil) and made a good ground connection to th...

p reg ignition problem 2ltr petrol

i bought my 2ltr petrol passat from a friend who had stored it in a garage for 4 years. pulled it out pumped up the tyres and i though the fuel would need replacing but she fired up first crank (with a jump start) sailed through an mot so i had a gas conversion done about 8 months ago. 25k miles lat...
