I had the same dilemma and ended up going for full set of Eibach springs for something like £120 delivered from Germany. I guess where will be more users who did the same. The only trouble is changing front springs is not as easy as the rear ones.

I would guess it's a condensation dripping down from due to use of aircon, used to have this with my B5.5, I guess B6 would be the same.

I did mine from the top. To get to it I've removed airbox and intake before turbo to make some space. Short open end spanner is your friend. Is your intake manifold with swirl flaps? IIRC swirl flaps open/close at 2100 rpm. I remember I used to get similar thing as you described if I gently and steady accelerate in that rev range. Just a guess.

Could be input shaft bearing in the housing have developed a play. This normally affects 1st and reverse being difficult to engage/disengage.
