clicking noise behind dash?
ive started getting a clicking from behind the dash. I think it is connected somehow to the indicator flasher unit because after I cancel the indicator is when it occurs. It sounds like the flasher unit when there is a bulb out ( none are!) - a faster click than the indicators themselves make. Any i...

Re: CV bolt
on a further note: when I undid the old bolt, I managed it easily using only the strong bar & no extension & only hand pressure!

Re: CV bolt
not only is it clicking at its max long before it gets to +180° but I also have a 3' long bar which I put onto a 2' strong bar & I weigh 13st & Im hard pressed to get +110°!! Many others are finding the same BTW! Dare say I could borrow a 3/4" sq drive strong bar & a 6' extension ...

Re: CV bolt
mine has the 14mm bolt which is 85lbft + 180° but if I set my torque wrench to its max ( 250lb) it clicks at about +70° ! so if I had a big enough torque wrench Im guessing it would take the torque to a massive number before it got to + 180° !

Re: CV bolt
never got mine to the recommended either. like you i put mine at 85lbft +90. and i was a torque wrench and a 3ft scaffolding pole. Was a little concerned, that it wasn't tight enough, but 6 months on, 5000 miles and an MOT pass, (and the driveshaft is still attatched) I'm happy with my effort. yep,...

CV bolt
anyone ever tightened their CV bolt to the "recommended" torque? - on most websites this is supposed to be for the 14mm dia bolt, 85lb ft PLUS 180° I stopped at +90° today as I felt the bolt would have snapped or stripped at + 180°! I would also have probably needed a 6' long extension ...

alternator pulley fun
changed my alternator pulley this morning. Thought it would be a dead easy job until I found the alternator bolts were fitted from the front! Took a wee bit of searching about to find the fan & its pulley could be ( had to be!) removed fairly easily to allow the bottom bolt to come out! All back...

Re: alternator pulley change?
oh I know how to do it but its a bit of a faff with all the fasteners that need to be removed, think if i need to do the pulley Ill just remove the alternator - if you use an impact gun to undo the spline nut it doesnt need to be held that tight.
still not sure if this is the cause of the noise tho.

Re: alternator pulley change?
thanks guys. Do you think its l;ikely to be the cause of the noise Im getting? Do these usually cause a lot of noise? I checked it when I did the cam belt in the summer & it was ok then.
The noise actually sounds more like the plastic engine cover rattling - but worse than that!

alternator pulley change?
getting a lot of noise from my engine ( 1.9tdi '05) when idling just now Im told this might be the alternator pulley? ( noise disappears when the idle speed is increased) Ive seen a few vids on how to check it - loosen the belt & jam the alternator & try turning the pulley each way - but is ...
